$519 traffic ticket for towing a boat 10 mph over..
the limit on Willow Pass on Hwy. 4...Ouch!!!...Buddy had to pay that the other day and
he went to court thinking it could get reduced and the judge said "Nope" pay the $519!
I'll check to see for sure if he was 10 over 55, or, 10 over 65 the next time I see him...
In either case, that's alot of moolah for that infraction...Boat towers beware...

Re: $519 traffic ticket for towing a boat 10 mph over..
It had to be 10 over 55. Speed limit for all trucks and autos while towing is 55 mph. Now with that said. You can safely get away with 60mph and I mean 60mph not 61 not 62 but 60. When I was a truck driver I got pulled over for 63 in a 55 down at the junction of Hwy 99 and Hwy 5. I got a ticket that was 60 in a 55. Cop gave me a break. Yeah right. Because it was a commercial vehicle it ran me like 600.00 but I did get to go to traffic school and keep the point off my record. The school was a joke to say the least.
Another thing to remember while towing. On a 3 lane freeway you can only drive for two miles in the center lane. Bet most of ya didnt know that one did ya. They can and will pull you over for that one.

Re: $519 traffic ticket for towing a boat 10 mph over..
No more traffic school for truckers now, you lucked out!! that must have been a few years ago they changed the law . I have a perfect driving record for that reason LOL and yes I did know that
Yea I believe it you use to be able to take a day and go to court to get the ticket reduced but not no more this state is so broke they are scratching the bottom of the barrel!!! Keep it all good or pay the price!!!

I got a ticket last month for 65 in a 55 towing my boat with my Bronco. Cost me about $625 with the traffic school although they said no traffic school for commercial licenses, Guess a class B license for the fire engine dont count as a commercial. Still pissed about that ticket especially when I think I drove all the way to the colorado river for OT and it was 113 out there just to try and get ahead and then I end up $625.00 in the hole.
If I was not so vested in employment working for the state I would be gone. I dont think they have the 55 law in other states for trailers. How does it make sense to have traffic going 10 miles slower than other high speed traffic. A lot of drivers I see have a hard enough time flowing 65 with others. One thing is for sure this state is trying to generate revenue through tickets and I was told CHP is supposed to write 30% more than they used to to help out and bring that revenue up. This state has become so pussified it makes me sick. Have a great day

I agree If my wife and all her family wasn't here in Ca I would hi tail it nack home to Texas all my family is still there and things are good they added half a million jobs this year so far Ca needs to take notes !! I have a jeep wrangler siting on Mickey Thompson 33's I got pulled over in Tracy and when I ask the officer why he pulled me over he said he had to check my tire tread !!!!! I cracked up laughing, he just looked at me I said go ahead I am well within my wear bars on the tires and for what i paid for em you can bet i am gonna run em all the way down to that wear bar. He pulled out a quarter and stuck it in my tread then said have a nice day. What a joke! I wanted so bad to go off on this guy and 10-15 years ago I would have (grown up alittle now lol ) so I told him you to and got back in my jeep and took off.
I love California but the politicians of this state all need to be kicked out of office from the highest branch to the lowest we need to be restuctured . Who knows maybe enough people will move and we can get control, seems like every time I turn around i talk to someone moving out of state and 9 out of 10 times they are moving to Texas. I drive a truck for a living and been on lay off since Sept. of 2010 ( lucky my wife makes a grip) there are no trucking jobs in this state unless you want to go over the road and I have paid my dues and not doing it. As a matter afact I am in the process of opening my own little buisness becuase I cant find local work . Yea this state is hurt right now . All we can do is ride the storm out.

Re: $519 traffic ticket for towing a boat 10 mph over..
Ticket when towing reminds me.... few months back I got ticketed when towing on that hiway between Konocti Vista Casino and the KV Motel when I got pulled over I was asked how fast I was going and I said 55 and he said thats right, thats why you're gettin this ticket... now, slow it down! ?!?!?! So what is the speed limit there?
Didn't cost 500 was around 300 but then paid for traffic school and all that. so still ended up close to 500...didn't try to get it reduced cuz didn't want to take vacation time todrive all the way there and go to court in Lake County. Probably pay 3 bills in gas to make the trip anyway so, figured pay the ticket and be done with it but...
Just wondering is there like a school zone on the hiway that I missed???

Re: $519 traffic ticket for towing a boat 10 mph over..
As part of my work I write traffic tickets up here in Oregon and I think our ticket fines are ridiculous. Cali takes the cake on that it appears. A ten over cite here goes 142 bucks and up to 25% can be reduced by the judge. It used to be 97 dollars but a couple years ago our money grubbing legislature added a 45 dollar tax to each ticket. 31+ over the limit is 472. The biggie is going 100 mph. It is 1186. I write tickets for ten over, but the people who get them were doing 15-19 over, which is 190 bucks so I drop it down as low as it can go. I can't imagine writing someone for a true 10 mph over the limit, school zone with children present or snow and ice excepted. I've been in the business 15 years and a true ten over ticket is a cop getting stats or generating revenue, not public safety. Warnings are a great thing for 10-14 over. I feel for you all down there if your cops are writing you up for a true ten over, especially on highways.
Re: $519 traffic ticket for towing a boat 10 mph over..
Make no mistake "IF YOU ARE TOWING A BOAT YOU ARE BEING TARGETED. California is broke and is looking for ways to pay for there mistakes I have had that ticket twice and my most of my friends too. I know a guy who got nailed for 62 miles per on the 118 on a empty freeway on a sunday morning I have to say that to me is uncalled for, and PETTY,AND JUST PROVES THERE TARGETING BOATERS. Oh yeah if your a chp and you gave one of these tickets SHAME on you !!!!!

well before I moved out of Ojai they were writing tickets for 5 mph over! I got two of them in one year! That's outrageous. I told one of them they are disgracing themselves doing that...but that was after i had signed and was getting ready to leave.

Slow down, be safe, and you'll get there in one piece and save on getting those big fines.......And.......you'll get better Mpg and save there too !!

55 MPH sucks especially out of town. Heavily congested areas okay. I am at the point that I will not tow anything in Ca. unless I have to. 55 makes that drive to Clear Lake a trip from hell. Az is 10 mph over limit. Never heard of anyone get cited for less than 10 MPH over the speed limit.Don't try 11 because you will get cited. And yes we can drive 75 towing in the number 1 lane if we want to. You can even tow in the HOV lane. With Mr. Moon beam as your leader it will only get worse. That dream act is right off the charts and you are paying for as well as the rest of the country.Ca. gets itsfair share of Fed $$$. I see Brown as 1 term governor but he will sign off on so many liberal bills you guys will never know what hit you and by then it will be too late. Good luck
Re: $519 traffic ticket for towing a boat 10 mph over..
I got stopped on the 101 near Westlake about 2 years ago for towing the boat at 70mph. Cost me $580 by the time I was done. Nice how you are now guilty untill proven inocent. Pay the fine first and then try to get it back in court. What happened to get a ticket, go to court, argue the case, If you loose the judge asks if you need time to pay. Ahh the good old days!
Re: $519 traffic ticket for towing a boat 10 mph over..
Here's the way I look at it. If I'm pulling my boat at 65 or 70(which I do), and I get ticketed for it, the only one to blame is myself. Not the CHP or the courts. I knowingly was driving over the limit. What happened to personal responsibility here? Now maybe the fines are a little excessive, but I know it while I'm doing it. No offense here Byron, but what innocence is there to prove? You were pulling a boat at 70 mph as I do also, but maybe not anymore now. (I wish I new how to do the smillie faces on here but I can't figure it out because I don't want to sound like I'm getting in your face, because I'm not at all). The problem though now is, now that I talked about it, I'll get a ticket the next time I tow.

I was coming back from the Delta yesterday and was towing around 63 - 65 and had two CHP cars just drive right by me.
There are a few other states that require you to tow at 55 or 60. Washington is 60. If my memory serves me right Ore. is 55 as well as Ohio and Illinois. My two favorite states to drive in are Az. and NM. Both are 75mph. Driving the I10 going cross country man as soon as you hit the bridge separating Ca. from Az. its time to put the power to the pavement and haul ***.
Dual speed limits cause accidents and is well documented. Dont know why these states continue to do this. In fatal accidents involving a car and a truck, most were caused by the car not the truck.
Truck drivers are mostly paid by the mile. In Ca. your are paid less per hour than all the other states who have speed limits higher than 55. If I get paid .50 per mile then legally i make 27.50 per hour. When im in Az. I make 37.50 and hour

Oregon is 55 for semi trucks only. You can tow at whatever the auto limit is, which is 65 on open interstate and 55 or 60 in metro. When towing with the camper on I set my cruise at 61 or 62 to save fuel. Without the camper I still tow around 65-68. I'm not in that big a hurry anymore towing. Without towing, however, I hover around 8 over.b2customrods wrote:There are a few other states that require you to tow at 55 or 60. Washington is 60. is there some reason for not going 55 when towing ur boat...u got an investment back there and any wrong move at high speeds and its gone, and explain that to your insurance agent when u get written up for speeding and a wrecked boat...i travel from manteca to clearlake at least twice a year...55 to 58...two stops and there in less then 4 hours....whats the hurry....

55 MPH towing is flat STUPID! There are far more accidents because we are holding traffic back and motorists get impatient doing 55 behind us and start passing. Stupid law!!
My last one was 65 MPH on Hwy 99. It cost me $500 plus. There was cars doing over 90 and i questioned him on it. He said "i don't care if they are doing 100.....I am after combos". I was so *^&%^&^*^ mad I couldn't see straight. Yes, i was doing exactly 65 and knew it. His attitude is what made me the hottest. I swear if my kids would move, i'd be headed for Texas tomorrow!! This state flat sucks!! Writing BS tickets is not going to fix things. The state needs too much money. All politicians in this state should be fired or worse

Re: $519 traffic ticket for towing a boat 10 mph over..
To me the problem is if I am on a busy freeway where traffic is going 70 to 75 and I am doing 55 that is unsafe as the speeds are to far apart. Typically I can drive pretty smooth when towing on the freeway and when I am doing 55 with someone tailgating me that is a hazard. I've ran more than a few calls in my career and seen a few things when it comes to accidents. Plenty of them are caused by impatient people so why would I want to hold back traffic or drive in the far right lane and deal with cars getting on and off when I have a longer than usual vehicle. The problem is the law is stupid and is a hazard on our overcrowded Commiefornia freeways.

Re: $519 traffic ticket for towing a boat 10 mph over..
I think the 55 towing law is way outdated and harkens back to the days of stationwagons pulling airstream trailors and such. Few 5th wheelers back then and many tow vechicles with poor suspension and trailors not suited or built as well as today also many more two lane roads then, less interstate type highways. Calif. is more of an exception with the 55 law as so many other states don't limit to 55. True one can save fuel at a lesser speed, with todays truck and trailors, 70 mph is not unsafe given proper braking power and a good driver and properly serviced equipment in my opinion.
the best way to catch a big one is don't lose um sharp hooks set drag retie!
Re: $519 traffic ticket for towing a boat 10 mph over..
70 mph on 4 or 12 is stretching it safety wise. 75 on the freeway is lot safer than 55 for all the reasons listed above. On the freeways I am always at 65 to 70 and I have never been stopped yet when towing, CHP just drive right by me.
I can say with out any doubt that 55 is not always the best speed for fuel mileage. Every vehicle has its own sweet spot for the the best mileage, it all depends on gear ratio's and how the computer fuel and timing tables are programed. My avalanche gets it best mileage towing at 62 to 65. My last trip to clear lake, including a week of city driving netted me 14.2 mpg running 65 plus on the road. How ever that was after I had custom tuned the computer.

Do a trial by deposition. Paperwork on the court web site. Submit it with your bail. Judge will ask officer to submit his story. Officer will not submit, they are to busy most of the time and will not get paid overtime because they will not be going to court, Your word against his judge will throw it out and they will send your bail back.
Re: $519 traffic ticket for towing a boat 10 mph over..
That's good in theory but not reality. I've done it twice on a red light camera and 62 while towing. Guilty both times , though they did drop the fine a bit.619 wrote:Do a trial by deposition. Re: $519 traffic ticket for towing a boat 10 mph over..
Nope, Washington is the same speed as autos unless specially marked. There are a few other states that require you to tow at 55 or 60. Washington is 60.
I lived in California when the 55 mph law went into effect for towing. The excuse was often cited as being for safety, but that is a cover story; the real reason was an assualt against SUV's/Trucks which often are used for towing. The assault against SUV's/Trucks is all about fuel mileage.
I agee with Gary, the 55 mph limit for towed vehicles creates a safety hazard that I hate everytime I tow in CA. 2 lane Interstates with cars zipping around a boat trailer and then the car slams on its brakes.
Wish you guys would vote in the right politicians and change the laws back to something that makes sense so I can move back when I retire.

I done one for a speeding ticket and one for a fix it ticket. Sure the fix it ticket was only $35 and the clerk gave me a funny look when I told her I wanted the declaration packet but i'm not giving this state one more cent then I have to.

Declaration will work more often then not, the problem with the red light camera is there is no human to write a repot, you will lose...cameras don't lie.

55 mph is the speed limit for autos with trailers and trucks; Code 22406.

Long open streches of 70 mph freeway and towing @55 mph sucks! On int 5, 99 & 10 trucks will run you over @ 65 mph. Paying $500+ for the previlage of keeping up with traffic is always an option.

I usually run 55-62 when towing the boat to Clear Lake. The girl friend always get mad and impatiant ... "I don't know why you are going so slow my dad does 70 with his boat going to Clear Lake" I drive 1000+ miles per week for work, I get those tickets and insurance for me goes up I will loose my job. Her self employed father gets those tickes the company just pays a little more for insurance. I tell her if she wants to go faster she can drive, I could use the break. LOL She hasn't got in the drivers seat yet.
As far as the different speed limits it is STUPID, I will never forget when I was 15 in drivers ed in high school we had a CHP come in and talk to us the only thing that I can remember him saying was " Accidents are caused buy one vehicle going faster or slower than another " ... A CHP tells me this then the law requires it to happen. WTF

Re: $519 traffic ticket for towing a boat 10 mph over..
If you want peace of mind and to avoid a big ticket, get a radar detector.... A decent one will save you a ton of money. Just drove down from Oregon to Napa yesterday and had two instances where I had time to slow down, switch lanes and watch the car in front of me get a ticket. Gary's right about other motorists being more of a danger becoming impatient. Some idiot is always trying to pass you from way back in merging lanes.

Got to love CA; cross over the boarders at AZ and it's 75 mph towing and OR it's 65 mph, same rig. You could tow 65 mph for years on the open areas on interstates, no longer in CA. My favorite; people passing on the right going 90+ when you move over to the left to passing a slower vehicle and they are trying to get through the gap before it closes. Where is the CHP, clocking you as speed up to pass.

Re: $519 traffic ticket for towing a boat 10 mph over..
This is what chaps me. The dang roads are so beat up in the right lane you almost have to tow in the second lane. Then you accidentally find yourself going with the flow of traffic which is 65. The trucks these days are made so good and with our tandem trailers you almost forget you have your boat in baeck of you. I don't see a way out as I have been lucky so far towing. What happened to the day of ( Hey Guy slow it down a little ok ) They dont give you a break any more. I still feel like they are using raday far more than they used to and are in my oppinion told if you pull someone over cite them. Am I wrong

Yeah I was,"Marking time" chasing and arresting a meth dealer driving a stolen car who had a loaded handgun, the dope, scales, and a bunch of cash on him last weekend, his 37th arrest cycle. But I guess that did no good for society...just keeping a small businessman down huh? Oh, and the DUII I arrested last weekend as well...should of let him continue to drive like he was...he PROBABLY would have made it home fine. And the dude I arrested selling weed to teenagers, again just this last weekend? Shoot, he's just a "Budding" pharmacist, right? He'd be happy to sell some to your kids...you OK with that? I guess I'm just, how do you say it, a "F'n joke", and an,"overpaid and useless government employee". I guess I'll be those all day long if what I do meets those descriptions in your mind.durobi wrote:It must really be satisfying to be a law officer in today's society and realize you are doing so much " good " for society. Most of them are just marking time until they can get their lavish retirement. What a F'n joke . Just more overpaid and useless government employees.
And now on the fishing front...I must say Richard Dobyns and Phil Strader kicked everyone's tail up here a couple weeks ago at the Nixon's Open on Tenmile....Excellent job by those two gentlemen.

Hey Mike, don't let people like this bother you(which I'm sure you don't). You deal with the dregs of society on a daily basis. Durobi, if you don't like a law, get out from behind your keyboard and work to change. Don't blame the enforcers. There isn't a person on this board that wouldn't back you up on your process. We all think it is a stupid law. Also, if the time comes when someone breaks into your house with a gun threatening your family, make sure you call 911 so a F'n overpaid government employee can come and rescue your ars.

I'm glad someone (M.B.) responded to the earlier post about useless. I was going to but as an infrequent poster I didn't think it would be taken seriously. I've worked around law enforcement officers/deputies as a mental health professional for nearly 30 years and I not only give them my utmost respect but am thankful for them daily. I also understand the anxiety their families feel everyday, worrying if their loved one will come home. For example, how would you handle it if you came upon a car on fire and had to listen to the screams of the occupants as they burned to death, knowing that there was nothing you could do to save them. Consider this and all of M.B.'s examples next time before you refer to them as overpaid or useless. Law enforcement is our domestic army and they suffer as much PTSD as anyone in the military.
Take a kid fishing and give them memories for a lifetime.
Re: $519 traffic ticket for towing a boat 10 mph over..
The CHP doesn't make the laws. Our legislators do! If you don't like the law then work to get it changed. The officers work for a boss. The boss says go out and do something they have to do it, or else. Just like everybody else they answer to someone. So if you think 55 is stupid write your legislator. It doesn't make any difference if it is 10 over or 5 over, the key word is OVER.
We as a society have a strange view of illegal in more areas than just traffic laws. It is either legal or it isn't. I will now put down the keyboard and pick-up my rod.

Heads-up for Delta anglers on I-5 between Sacramento and Stocton. With the speed limit reduced from 70mph to 60mph for about 25 miles, the CHP has become far less tolerant of boat-towers going over 55. I got a warning last weekend for doing 62mph.
