What would you do?

Post by Terry Smith »

I was fishing A tournament at Folsom and one of my competitors had two markers out at the old Salmon Falls bridge on the South Fork. Normally I stay away from people's markers because they are fishing an island top or whatever. But these guys had one marker at the North end of the bridge about 30 yards from shore which is where the bridge meets land and the other about 80 to 100 yards South which is about the whole distance of the bridge. They just kept going back and forth all day sitting on one marker for about an hour then slowly move back to the other one so that no one else would fish the area. My question is do you think it is O.K. for someone to hold an area that big so that no one else would fish it??????? Or would you fish the area when they moved off to go to the other marker??????

Well the rules for that tournament say that you must give fifty yards to other competitors. If your 80-100 yards than your well within the rules to fish that area.

damm.. if i was in your situation and there was only about 10 to 15 teams/boats... i just say the hell with it and let the "you know what" have his crapy hole..................... but if this was a big event, how unrealistic could 1 person/team be...

sometimes you just gotta do what you have to and at the same time honor all rules.... there has been a few events where people have won, cashed out the prize, then the directors have the rules revised because someone saw a grey area..........

if the rules say 50 yards and a team/boat has 80-100 blocked off............ tell the guy nice try and give him the directors number if he needs some cheese with his wine.

If I was certain the area was where I wanted to be and they were doing that crap, I'd be parking just off the bouy that the weren't fishing and casting towards 'em and raping the spot. They can mark it all they want, but they have to be within casting limits of the bouys else it is fair game as far as I recall. I suppose it depends on the org and their rules, but courtesy is courtesy and you can only stretch the limits so far without going over the line, AFAIC.

Then, as they moved in, I'd move around 'em towards the other end... I'd bet they'd tighten up their markings, else if the fishing was that good you'd end up with a good sack and watch 'em cry while you're reeling in the bigguns!

If this is an area that you PLANNED to fish, not stopping just because they are there. What if you were realy nice and did them a favor. When they move to the next marker, move in, pickup the marker, motor over towards them (stay the proper distance away) and say here is the marker that you forgot (drop the marker). Go fish the spot. :D

A marker buoy doesn't grant you any space in any rules I've ever read (although there are probably some I haven't) all it does is identify a feature (and there's a reason a lot of us paint them and the line black). The trolling motor up and an anchor down will get you 50 yards in most organization's tournaments. Putting out buoys and expecting them to claim space is absurd.

I remember listening to Dee Thomas talking about getting into the other anglers heads! It looks like that team got into your head!

Tournament Bass Fishing is a sport like any other sport and those other sports push the rules to their favor or make believe there are rules you can’t do something. It looks like that other team put out two marker to clam a fishing area to keep other anglers out of it. There is nothing that says they can’t do it and if you don’t know the rules and don’t fish it, who fault is that?

I would fish the marker. I mean if I'm bed fishing and I have markers on the beds are you going to stay away from them? Hey mayble I'll try that next time...sounds like it works! Funny thing is that you would most likely get in their heads and piss them off if you did while at the same time, doing nothing wrong so it's a double win!

Hey Terry !

I had a similar experience at Clear Lake recently, may be you caught my post ?

Any way ! I think if you flipped On That Pink Bunny Suit you keep stashed on your boat. Would have been enough to make the guy's do a double take and skedaddle out of there !
  Just my humble opinion ya know. But seeing how ya were skunking up the place anyway. Couldn't Of Hurt None
