What is the best Rod for..

Post by bassinwannabe »

Throwing Jerk Baits? Also what about flippin Senkos? I'm just a weekend basser so I don't have the best equipment. I have several spinning rods/reels in diff. lengths and I have a 7' uglystick baitcaster with a Curado reel ( best reel I have ever owned)!

TIA

If you can afford around $250.00 talk to Steve Biechman, stevescustomrods.com about a good rod. If that is out of your budget then check out a cranking rod or extreme out of BPS. Go with a medium action, 6-6 to 7ft and you should be pleased. Bill K :)

You should check out the Powell Rods. They where designed by Gary Dobyns who is the tops when it comes to rippin in my mind.
If you are ripping smaller baits such as the Stacy or pointer 100
I would suggest the CB704, If you are ripping the larger baits like a pointer 128 I would suggest the CB706.
As far as Flipping Senkos, check out the Powell 765

I flip alot and the powell rods for me perform every bit as well as the more expensive flipping sticks.

If you want more info, feel free to contact me. 707-972-5188

Just got my new rods today....

Post by NaCl »

I'm having a terrible time stay in the office. I've got some new Powell rods sitting in my truck that just arrived today!

I hear ya when you talk about having a variety of rods. When I got started, I bought what I could afford. It didn't matter which brand. I had kids to feed, a mortgage and overdrawn credit cards. So, I had to spend my money on rods that would be versatile. There was no such thing as having a rod fro each application! Hell, I was lucky to have a rod with all its guides! HAR!

For my new flippin stick, I chose the Powell 765. It's an awesome 7 1/2 foot rod! But, but if you're somewhat new to bassin, I'd suggest staying with a 7 foot rod. Longer rods can make a weekend fisherman's arms tired by the end of the day. Plus, the right 7' rod is super versatile...take Powell's 704C. This rod is good for flippin, C-rigs, spinnerbaits, jigs, big Senkos (that Delta fish love)...it even has enough backbone to throw frogs on it. This rod is super versatile. And, its a great bargain at $ 169! You can't buy a comparable Loomis or custom rod anywhere near that price.

Good luck!

LOL , not me. I just went and spent $30 on a Uglystick rod to put my curado on. I have been Bass fishing for many years and am lucky enough to have about 5-6 poles I bring with me. The only reason I do that is to have diff. baits tied on so I can save time. I have entered a few tourneys and even came in 3rd place in the back seat with a semi pro on Folsom a few years back. I read all the mags and would love to fish for a living. I only wish I would have gotten into it at a younger age.

I think the 7' will serve me well for a while. Thanks again for all the help. Wish me luck, I will be on Folsom tomorrow :D

Since you asked, Jigs...

...you afford those kind of prices by working hard and making good decisions. When you start with nothing, and have a family to take care of (which is priority #1), it won't happen overnight.

With time, hard work and good decisions, ANYONE can make enough money in the USA to afford quality equipment. And if you take care of what you buy, it will last forever and you won't be wasting money on junk that wears out.

My grandfather immigrated from Italy as an illiterate (even in italian) without a penny to his name to find a better life. He raised 8 wonderful children working his butt off as a gardener in Pennsylvania. He isn't unique; anyone in this country can do it if they really want to.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Work your Butt OFF!!

For a lower Price: Lamiglas CFC 685, its a graphite backbone wit a fiberglass tip which will give your bait a more life like action.

For a slightly higher price: XC 704 X Its a reaction bait series rod with the perfected action for shallow running crankbaits and Jerkbaits. Also its very sensetive for feeling those slack line hits.

Rob,
Check out the Lamiglas "compettitor" series. They are under 100- have a good warranty. I have 2 of them and I am very pleased with there perfomance, the quality is good and they fish well for me. I bought them at the hook for around 90 bucks + tax. They aren't tournament rods, but I'm not a tournament fishermen either. I think you would be very pleased with them.

Fishing an a budget is tough but it can be done. I have built up a very fishable selection of rods, reels, and tackel over the last five years all while going to and paying for college and grad school, keeping my wife happy and having a daughter. Would I like to own the all Loomis rods? Yes but it is not an option for me. Insted I shop around and look for what I can afford. BPs and Cabelas rods are very servicable and low in price, so are some quality rods form Berkley, Fenwick, and Shimano. I try not to skimp on reels but I have bought $39.00 shimano baitcasters to get me through a couple of seasons untill I can afford to buy a curado. I have told all my family if they really want to make me happy by giving me a gift make it a gift crtificate to a tackel store. I look at clasified ads online, go to garage sales, do anything I can to find a deal, and they are out there if you look. Once I do get a quality rod or reel I rtreat it as if I will not be able to replace it, because in acyuallty I wont, not for at least a year. I curently am fishing with: 1 loomis rod (bought with a broken tip at a garage sale for $20.00 replaced for a new rod from Loomis for $20.00) Three Pfluger rods (bought wholesale) A cabelas muskie rod for swim baits.a BPS fliping stick and two fenwick spinning rods I have owned for years. the reels I have are a brand new Citica (Christmas Gift) Curado (Cristmas Gift) one of the new Mitchel spinning reels ($39.00-great reel BTW) an older Lews (bought at a garage sale and rebiult total $25.00)a Shimano Sematre (bought when I was single) and a Pflueger swimbait reel (cabelas package deal))I also am very selective in the baits I use. I do not fall for every new craze, but rather buy lures that have worked for me in the past.

My point (longwinded) is that you don't need the best and newest to be an effective fisherman, and if you look around you can fish on a budget.

Thanks everyone. I don't mind spending $$ on something I enjoy. After all I have a Salt water fish tank hobby that cost an arm and a leg. If not for that I would have some nice tourney rigs

For jerkbaits I like a rod between 6'6" and 7'0". 8-17lb line w/ a med or med/fast action is perfect. I use the Powell 684CB rod....its a 6'8" rod. Best jerkbait/topwater rod I've ever used, you gotta check it out. For Senkos I like a 6'6"-7'0" med/heavy rod rated 8-17 or maybe as high as 10-20....the 2 I use are Loomis MBR783C IMX and MBR843C IMX. Senko rods are best w/ a light tip, although many rods will work for them because they do have a decent amount of weight to them.

The 704C is one of the most versitale rods I have ever owned! It is stout enough to throw so many baits as he discribed! Plus it has green thread and it will match your Curado! :D
