Former Classic champion Iaconelli, caught five fish for an 11-9 total, but he was disqualified for breaking BASS sportsmanship rules. BASS officials said they made the decision after viewing videotape that showed Iaconelli becoming angry after two of his fish expired and he "destroyed some safety equipment" on his boat.
Brilliant, simply brilliant. This ought to make his sponsors proud.

I just watched it. Looks like he was pissed about a couple dead fish that he couldn't cull, so he ripped his rear light pole out, looks like it bent in half. Then he threw it down.....can't tell if it went in the water or not.

AND.....the pole had an american flag on it!

They also had a clip of him releasing a fish that may have been expired, but it's really too hard to tell. I didn't see it's gills moving. He made a comment, "I gotta fish, can't worry about it!"

to me, he got what he deserves!

Ike, ike, ike...

I just saw the video. Mike was distraught after discovering two dead fish in his live-well (he had apparently forgotten to turn on the timers to aeriate) and in a fit of anger, grabbed the flag pole on his boat, kicked and punched at it and pretty much mangled it before tossing it to the deck.

BIG mistake.

I've been a fan of Ikes since his breakthrough in '03 but this burns me up. I don't care how angry you get, you don't mess with the American Flag (or the pole holding it). I think BASS was right to DQ him for unsportsmanlike conduct and he owes everyone an apology for his actions.

I agree with the whole throwing the all around light down and especially with that national ensign flying from it totaly out of line big breach of ethics, if he plans on taking his career any where he will need to learn to controll that temper.

Any he thinks he wants his lawyer involved now???!!!!

Post by photon »

Just 11 hours before he was due back on Lake Tohopekaliga for the second day of the Classic, Iaconelli didn't know whether he would participate, saying it would depend on conversations with his lawyer. Iaconelli was also disqualified in the 2004 Classic for accidentally fishing in an off-limits area during Day Two of that event.

...DQ'd in 2004 for intentionally fishing in an off-limits just to get some media coverage, and now this. Talk about falling from Grace. Maybe he can fish (although 11-9 pounds wasn't squat in this tournament), but the guy is a loser in life. What a great role model for the kids, huh. I hope all of his sponsors dump him for degrading the flag, not to mention our beloved sport.

He definitely moved up a couple of notches on the "Most Hated Athletes" list with this crap.

Sorry guys, this just frosted my nuts. As my father used to tell me when I was a kid, "Bad things happen to bad people".

Who in their right mind would throw a temper tantrum like that at the Classic w/ a camera in their face?? He has no sense whatsoever. Him throwing out the dead fish is something else I didnt like either, although it didnt violate BASS rules apparently. Its funny how mature he acted on camera while trying to justify his actions. It doesnt matter that he didnt direct his anger towards a person, the point is that his behavior is a negative influence on people and gives the sport a bad image. I am planning on going up to see the Classic in person tomorrow and Sunday. Wonder if anyone will boo him???

Poor Ike.
Atleast he's living up to his #6 G.Q. Worst Hated Athletes Reputation.
The sad thing is that there are people who think this is what this sport needs.
Focus on the positive....Sieg...What about Luke (almost 30 pounds)

Post by NaCl »

You might be onto something. Its pretty obvoious Mike the Mouth wasn't competitive in the actual fishing. He might have figured this was the only way he was going to get any attention. Kind of like when a young child intentionally pisses in his pants so mommy will pay attention to him. I'll bet his sponsors are proud! He even set a new BASS record...for DQ's! Wonder how you write that up on your "professional" resume???

No publicity stunt or uncontrollable anger justifies the lack of respect he demonstrated for our flag and its symbolism. Too many brave men and women fought and died for that flag. Surely even Ike can't be that callous and disrespectful...even for publicity. No, I have to chalk this up to immaturity, egocentricity, ignorance, insensitivity, and lack of respect. If he is smart he will immediately start damage control with a heartfelt public apology.

Right on...Marc.
If you read his interview on Bassmaster...it wasn't his fault.
Insteads of looking in the mirror at the problem, he blames everyone else.
He is a fuse ready to explode.

I have always muted him and I know many just think his yelling, etc is a new style and such. But he has always shown, to me, being immature and has always blamed someone else for his actions. In this case HE forgot to turn on his airaters, etc. Then the final straw of showing a total lack of respect towards the flag. Everyone has the right to their believes and all, but they should never show disrespect towards what others do believe in and hold in high regard. Bill K :(

He is a monster of of BASS's own creation! The more outrageous his behavior ,the more air time he gets (whether Ikes on fish or not) He definately wasn't going to get any attention for the size fish he was catching so he had to "act up " to put the focus on himself for some more air time . After watching some of the classic coverage this morning and comments made about Ike's temper tantrum maybe BASS is turning on its darling . Dr. Frankenstein realized his error after creating his monster too.....

I bet all his peer's, especially the really well known names, will steer away from him and it would not hurt my feelings if each and everyone of his sponsor's pull his ads or delete him from the present ones. Maybe he would grow up and learn something about being professional. Time will tell. Bill K :)

Yup, your absolutey right...This little temper tantrum got more talk and hype than the WHOLE tournament. I wouldnt doubt it if he was paid under the table to create a commosion as this one. Look at threads theres more on Iconelli than the weight of the fish in this tournament. I think it was like 735 lbs. for a combined weight compared to last years tournament which had a weight of 300 something lbs. also more fish than this year. Those are some pretty big hogs... But all eyes were still on Iconelli/26th/ DQ'd...Marketing strategies...and remember TV is ENTERTAINMENT...

What happened to "Go Natural?"

Post by badbass25 »

did anyone notice the "go natural" commercial didn't even air during the weigh-in? It aired a few times yesterday. It aired only once this morning. Not only is he hurting himself, but he is hurting Skeet as well!!! It may have aired more times, but I only noticed once. I reviewed the tapes to make sure. Just something to note.

If I remember correctly, Aaron Martens lost fish during a recent classic (I think the one before Pittsburg) and although he wasn't happy, he didn't have a tirade. I remeber him saying he never lost a fish before and you could tell he was frustrated, maybe even with the boat, since he wasn't that familiar with it. Ironically, he now runs Triton. In any case, he displayed a much better way of handling the situation...

Two more observations...

Yesterday they said that there were 20-30 boats following Ike around....today they said there were none.

and

They didn't show him weighing in today. I wonder what the reception from the audience was like??

Yea he has gotten a lot of attention for himself and BASS. BFD he ripped his light pole out. As long as he doesn’t interfere with an opponent who cares, let him roll around on the floor and chew on his carpet. Why show it on TV and then penalize him for it. Who would have known? I’ll tell you why ESPN (BASS) would air Ike crapping on his flippin deck. It’s all about entertainment $$$$$$$$. The penalty seems hypocritical. They promote emotion, heck Davy Hite has learned to break dance. They don’t think there is a flipside? They could have stopped Ike’s outbursts long ago but BASS has been pimping this poor fool, and now they just bitch slapped him. Ike doesn’t bother me a bit; in fact I am amused by him. Having said that, I do NOT view him as a role model nor do I view him as an ambassadors to jack $#1Y

If we do not agree?

I agree with ya 100% , I'll bet you there is film on the cutting room floor with equal to or worse acts of temper , I'm not saying they are out to get Ike but I think it adds to his controversy , this is not a sport , with 500k on the line this is a living and if this happened [losing fish] to any of the other anglers about half of them would have reacted the same way Ike did .

Like Denny Braur said he finished 51st forget about him or talking about him. He's his own worse enemy. I personally never liked his antiques to begin with and he got what he deserved. 2 years in a row he has been DQed, its like if I cant win then dq me and I will have an excuse. He is suppose to be a pro and pros know how to turn on there live well and areator pumps, If he worked for me like he does his sponsors i would have fired him on the spot it was his own arrogance that got him in trouble. Just my $.02.

To be honest, I've never been an Ike fan, can't stand the screeming and arogance he displays. But I believe in people being different, and as long as it doesen't interfere with others, whatever, I don't have to like or watch him.
BUT, what he did to the American Flag crossed the line. I think BASS and Trip were easy on him, and they avoid mentioning the flag that was attached to that light pole. If I was one of his sponsors, I'd dump him and release a statement to distance my company from his anti-American behavior.
