The Smallmouth at Cachuma went off big time yesterday!
I just love Cachuma..If the largemouth aren't cooperating then the smallmouth will. Darn
3 pound smallmouth rippin you all day long on all kinds of different tackle. I'm no specialist at tossing hula grubs but I did get some lessons yesterday. I had gone out with some pre-concevied ideas about where and what I was going to do and I took out a guy who I had out in the boat two weeks ago when he found he could'nt launch as his father in law hadn't put the new stickers on the boat. We were totally alone when they opened the gate and let us launch.
Not even a trout boat
. Great I've got the lake to myself. I don't know if it was the foul weather that is coming or what but we didn't really do to well in the morning. Then I picked up a spider jig and on three consecutive casts caught 3+ pound smallmouth. We caught them on dropshot, jigs ripbaits,cranks,blades...With occasional largemouth in the mix. I put my buddy on the dock at 4:00 and went back out for the last hour and a half. Sweet suffering Mary did I find them then! I can't remember EVER being in to that many LARGE smallmouth here and I've been fishing Cachuma since 79'!!! While fighting your fish there would be two more trying to get the bait from the hooked fish. The water is cool at 55 and very clear! This storm ought to mess it up pretty good and that will only make things better. The log boom that was just strung across Santa Cruz is absolute B.S.
...It was never that far forward! I'd bitch about it but to whom I don't know and it would amount to sqwat so I'll have to just look longingly at some of my better spots that are no longer available. It's a shame and a sham that we can't fish it but I guess with the bad comes the good that all those fish in there are going to fill up my lake with babies
..I know a bunch of guys are toughing it out in the snotty weather at Clear Lake and I wish them all the best of luck. Hope you all Caught your dream stringer this weekend.

Well Kelly it sounds like you had a lot of fun in your backyard
You have got to love smallmouth when they are on the chew....

Hey Jim,,,,,
We have to get our collective sh*t together and get out there together! I'll show you my new must have bait
...It was pretty windy for an aluminium boat on Saturday and you wouldn't have had much fun as the bite doesn't take off until the wind picks up. We noticed all day that it would come and go and so did the fishing...but I'll show you a spot that will help you out considerably
