would like to get a 10' custom rod for surf perch

Post by jloo283 »

Hi all, I'm interested in a 10' rod for surf perch. I've looked at surf rods in 10-12', they're too heavy. I've looked at crappie rods in 10-12', they're too light. I haven't been able to find anything practical for this purpose.

I need one as light as possible without being too flimsy like the crappie rods, something like a typical 7' 6" MH bass rod in 10' instead, with good backbone to about 70% of the length, and with flexible tip to throw 1/2-1.5 oz weights.

I would appreciate any recommendation on where to find one, or will be interested in hearing quotes from rod builders out there.

Thanks
James

James, have you looked at the many models that Lamiglas makes? They make 10-footers designed for weights as light as 3/4 oz and 12lb test. Check them out at http://www.lamiglas.com.

James, take a look at fly blanks. I think what your looking for would be about a 7wt 10' two piece blank. Have it custom wrapped for as a spinning rod. Try a fast action or extra fast action blank. Best bet would be to look at Mudhole.com or swampland.com. Maybe give them a call and see what they would recommend!

There are other options out there for this application. I have made a few, while fly blanks are good choices they sometimes lack in the backbone. Sent you a pm. Frank

You might contact Dennis at Cal-West Custom Rods. He's had a lot of experience building longer rods. If you give him the specifics, I'm sure he can get you the right rod for the job.

Go check light action steelhead rods. There are a lot of good options out there in casting & spinning rods in various lengths.
