Who is Here From the Pacific Northwest?

Post by Marc »

Hey guys and gals, just checking to see who is checking out the new forum?

Hope we get good participation so the California bass anglers learn how many good bass anglers there are in the Pacific Northwest.

I fish Oregon. But not the Columbia.
Have fished Tenmile, Tahkenitch, Siltcoos, Green Peter, and Triangle for 20 years.
I can help you some, if you are fishing around those parts of our state.

I'm not from the Northwest but I come up to Portland a few times each year to hang out with my brother, and we do some bassin' on the Columbia and Willamette River as well as Henry Hagg Lake. Some nice smallmouth in the rivers.

Welcome aboard, guys. It will be pretty quiet here if we don't pick up some more anglers from the Pacific Northwest.

Hey Mike, welcome to Washington! I live just a few miles north of Olympia so we will have to hook up and do some fishing. You are in for a real treat once you start to figure these bass out. Coming from Havasu and with your experience it won't take you long. Techniques are mostly the same, but locations and forage differ quite a bit.

I moved up here from So California in 1993 and thought my bass fishing was going to suffer; nothing could have been further from the truth. Great bass fishing here (smallmouths and largemouths), great tournaments (www.nwbass.net; and ABA), and great competition.

Did you move here permanently?

Marc, yes I am here to stay. I have been doing a little research on the lakes up here. Would love to hook up with you and chat or fish. Looks like you do have some great fishn in the PNW. Beautiful state.
Looks like there isn't much going on for tourneys for awhile from what i've seen, but i could be wrong.
Any awesome tackle shops in the area?

Mike,
Yes, we just finished our tournament season with the Northwest Bass TOC on the Columbia, and the ABA TOC also on the Columbia just before it. There are still some smaller club team tournaments (opens), including a fun event in February on Lake Sammamish called the Freeze Your Bass Blast. We can fish it together if you want. Smallies in 45 feet of water.

Tournaments start again in late March, and you can fish a tournament every weekend if you want. I get in about 25 each year. The Northwest Bass circuit is the largest team tournament circuit in the entire west; the year before last they averaged about 100 teams in each event. ABA events are fun, but on the west side participation has diminished to only about 25 teams per event.

Most of us take a break from Nov through March, but I still get out on Lake Washinton and Lake Sammamish throughout the winter since it doesn't usually freeze on the west side. The smallmouths bite all winter though they don't fight very well in the cold water (they make up for that the rest of the year). I also make a lot of fishing trips to California during this time period, and I'm heading down there over Thanksgiving and for the Angler's Marine BassAThon. I will be selling my QuickDrops dropshot sinkers there in a booth (http://www.quickdropsweights.com).

As far as good tackle shops, get used to internet shopping like Tackle Warehouse. The best ones are a little drive for you (3 Rivers Marine in Woodinville, Auburn Sports and Marine in Auburn). Closer and probably more overall stuff is in Sportco in Fife (half hour north to you up I-5), or Outdoor Emporium just south of Seattle.

Of course there is Cabela's right between you in Olympia, and me in Steilacoom. They really have a poor selection of what you need for bass fishing locally, though.

I also sent you a PM. Welcome to Washington!

Marc, not sure if Mike has 45 feet of line on his reels after Havasu! You know those Havasu guys dont have meters on their boats, they just stick the rod in the water. lol Hey Mike, my buddy Nolan just moved from there and he fished both Washington and Sammamish and had fun fishing the deep Smallies. Tube and/or grub on jighead smoked em. Lots of 2-5lb fish. Go get em dude and I will come see you when I fly up to see my little brother and sister. Rick G.

whats shaken Ricky, man is this place pretty. Cant wait to fish some of these lakes in washington and oregon also looks like it has some awesome lakes.
Is Nolan coaching still, wish he was still with the Pack. A-Rod is the man, dude is so humble. I think he could also wear a Yankee hat and play 3rd for that other a-rod dude. #12 prolly could get a clutch hit here and there.
talk to you soon bro.

I am. Grew up right on Lake Washington, just south of Seward Park. As a kid I fished the dock next door for Perch. Also, would spend a lot of time at the ol'Martha Washington School for Girls ( this is when the buildings still existed. they don't anymore ) catching Crawfish and Bullheads. Also caught a nice sized silver bank fishing at that school. My dad would take us out some Thursdays ( yeah, he would let me skip school ) into Puget Sound where I caught; Ratfish, Irish Lords, Red Snapper, Cod...bottom fishing.

Now, I live near Everett and frequent; Devils (Lost) Lake, Chain, Flowing, Storm, Cassidy, Panther, Margaret, Gardner, Crescent, Echo, Erie, Stevens, Martha ( Alderwood ), Stickney, Armstrong.

My son's and myself catch tons of trout at Margaret during open season. I've caught a handful of bass this year at Devils lake, and 2 from Martha. None were big, but I don't give a hoot.

I"m just schmuck that likes to be around lakes and fish.

I have a 14' Alum, Meyers Laker boat with a 55lb thrust electric. I use Rapalas only...I know I may be a bit narrow minded this way, but I like to fish them. I can't cast, and sit since I get bored too easily. I have to be working something and Rapalas allow me to do just that.

I'll bank fish as well when I just don't feel like lugging the boat around.

Between; Rapala original floaters, countdowns, xraps, flat raps, and shad raps I do ok catchin fish.

Yea, Gary, wish we could have visited more at the BassAThon. I brought my QuickDrops down and this is the first time I have actually displayed them at a show. I know most guys were interested in the latest swimbaits, and your rods, but a few came by and let me explain that not all dropshot sinkers are created equal.

I am also excited that Mike moved up here, and even more since he is living in the town just below mine, so we are practically neighbors. I hope to hook up with him and get him out on Lake Washington in December.

Used to live in between Seattle and Tacoma on the west hill of Auburn above the Green River. Grew up fishing many of the lakes and rivers in between (North Lake, Steel,Desire,Sawyer,American,Harts,Tapps). Was also super fortunate to have spent the majority of my summers in Redmond with my cousins. Used to flip rocks in the Sammamish slough for craws and throw them on the main body if not on Lake Washington. Learned a lot and realized live bait wasn't always the answer! ha... Used to visit a killer tackle shop in downtown Redmond that had an awesome bulk pour section. Anyone know if it's still there? the one with the 10lb Walleye from Sammamish on the wall!?

Washington has so much to offer, if anyone gets a chance make a trip up to the San Juan Islands. Been vacationing up there for maybe 25 years and my moms been living up there for the last 15 or so. Every visit reminds me of just how good the island life can be. Awesome rock/salmon fishing, crab'n, and some killer largemouth lakes with toad Northerns.

Also lived above the Middle Fork of the John Day river in Oregon for a few years working. Amazing smallmouth fishing with the most scenic views and virgin water.

I've since transplanted to California. It has been a dream since moving here in '98, never thought I'd get a chance to chase big largemouth in lakes that all have 17lb+ records  . I feel super fortunate to be able to live between the Delta and Clear Lake and still be 10 minutes from SF. Really can't complain no matter how deep this state is in debt :D

Rob, would love to fish the Cabin Fever Classic but the last several years it has bumped heads with the ABA WA West tournament (Sammamish). Wish it didn't conflict because you would get more of us guys coming down from Washington to fish it each year.

Good luck with the tournament!
