Only recommendation I have is NOT to buy Carlson tires. My family, friends and I have had numerous blowouts with them. I have also always gone up one rating.

I just had to do the same. Did a lot of research and the general opinion is ALL Chinese made tires are not good, this include the GY Marathones, now made in China. I had Towmaster from Costco and they worn out really fast. In comparison, I am still running my 7 yr old Canada made Marathones and they are still holding up. Based on my research, there were many good reviews on the Maxxis bradn, they are made in Thailand. I bought two for one axle. Time will tell how they will last. Harry

Correct in previuos post.

They are all made over seas now.

Truth is they all last about 2 years total.

Do not go by how much tread you have.

I work for a Tire Distributor and the truth is all the workmanship and materials are about equal over seas.

Maxxis,towmaster,Carlisle,Goodyear,Hi-run,Triangle and many more are not made in USA.

Dont expect more than 2 years......

Not saying some may not last longer, but this is for safety reasons.

If you take them off in 2 years you are less likley to encure separation wich is the most common reason for trailer tire failure.

Remember trailer tires take a serious beating, long sitting periods,no shocks or suspension to help soften the blow of your big bass boat!

Unfortunatly not a true better option right now, though many of my customers choose towmatser over the rest, but still recommend 2 year cycling off your rig.

Check tires and air pressure often for your best results.

Goodyear Marathon
I have used this brand of tire for 19 years on (3) different trailers towing a bass boat.
-No issues

I'm also in the same position as Rick and looking for trailer tires. I am running GY Marathons and suffered a thread separation on my Ranger 488VS trailer. The tires are 6 years old so I was running on borrowed time. Some of the other forums (Walleye, etc.) mention Kumho tires that are load class D. Has any one had any experience with them? They are priced the same as the GY Marathons.
Thanks,
Willard

Go to the BassCat website, get their contact number, and call their trailer guy.
He will talk directly to you, and is very generous with his info.
BassCat uses car tires on all their trailers, and they don't have problems.
They have a great warranty, so I'm sure they wouldn't use them if they were a problem.
I don't know which brand or model, but their trailer guy will tell you.
Boat trailers don't put any more stress on tires than cars, which are heavier, corner more, and have the additional loading of acceleration and braking.
Car tires are built way better than trailer tires, and are designed to get better mileage, so that's what I'm putting on my Ranger trailer next time.

I have had the Marathons and the Carly's and have had blowouts with both.
They also both road like my boat was on sponges, other boaters would often say hey it looks like your trailer tires are low on air.
I was very good at keeping them at 48PSI.

I'm now trying Kumho's and so far very happy with them.
(Their at that 2 year age where the others have blown out, so we shall see)
Higher Load Rating
Higher PSI Rating (65PSI)
Stiffer more controlled ride.

I Run at 55PSI and they now don't look like there flat anymore.
I have an 18.8" Viper Cobra with single Axel trailer. Tournament loaded of course.

http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp ... &tab=Sizes

Marathons Load Rating is something like 1750 lbs. the Kumho's are 2271 lbs.

Take a look and compare.

I recently had to replace another blown out GY Marathon, I was told GY is stopping production of the tire. The reseach I did showed the Kumho was the best bet. I found a new GY sine I already had 2 brand new ones.

Amazing how much cheaper they are than anyone else. Even after standard 2 day delivery to the Bay Area.

Rats! I have the same size wheels (14") on my trailer. I was all set to switch when my Marathons go.
Now I'll have to find another "perfect answer".

I was taught 20 yrs ago when selling RV trailers that bias ply tires were better on trailers because they withstood scuffing that occurs when trailers that don't have shocks bounce up and down. I was told that radial tires couldn't stand up to this. At the time I learned this, I was using radial auto tires on my boat trailer' and wondering why I kept getting flat spots, and tread separation etc. After this I started using bias ply tires, and I quit having problems.

Then several years ago I couldn't find bias-ply tires anymore, and a Trail-Rite trailer guy told me about GY Trailer Marathons, and I've been using them ever since. I assumed that as GY called them "Trailer Radials" that they were designed to overcome problems with regular radials. I'm on my 3rd set of these now, with only one problem that I hope was a fluke. Current set 3 yrs, no sign of wear.
