*** Winter Nutcase Classic - In the Books ***

Post by tunaman »

OK gang, we are going to hold a Nutcase event at Lake Berryessa on January 28th. Details will be posted here as they develop, and we hope that many of you will be able to join in the fun and frivolity.

Unfortunately I realize that this date doesn't work for all, and for that I apologize in advance.

We will be running out of Pleasure Cove. There are campsites, RV sites, and cabins if anyone is interested in staying over before or after.

I'll get the gate hours tomorrow and post them here... likely they will be on reduced hours on the order of 8:00 - 5:00 if history is any indication.

For reference - here is a link to the original post:

Yeah - Hubspinner traded up from the Avalanche and is showing off! How's that thang tow yer bote Gar???

We'll have the motorhome there, so we'll have lots of edibles and drinkables for everyone. Not sure if we're going to stick with the original menu or not, but as those who know Mona know that they won't be going hungry!

Getting close - and really looking forward to it!

Do we know what time the gates are open?
First light seems to still be in the 7:00am range.

I was thinking on bringing some potato salad, beer, ice...whatever else we need.

I've got to call and get the gate times for everyone... I'll post them up tomorrow.

I'f you're coming and can bring something, bring it. If not, we'll have enough.

I'll be heading out on Thursday with the motorhome and boat in tow, and the wife will be coming out on Friday. We'll be in our usual camp site, close to the ramp.

Weather is supposed to be superb, so it should be GOOD TIMES for those who dare join in!

For those So Cal weenies... ppphhhhhhtttttttt! We'll toss one or two down for you.

Well Cool!!! I thought I was going to have to call out two of the guys who have won multiple NutCase events, but they both posted that they will be there. Sweet. Now when I win it will be very legit. (Not that there wasn't a group of great sticks already  )
Where are the rest of you guys? sTony, Kap, Mac, Ash...are all of you fishing Shasta FLW??? (Scott (ASD) and Marty are excused, but you guys better make sure to attend the Spring one)
Looking forward to another great NutCase event.

OK gang - the gate closes at 8:00 PM on Friday, and is open from 7:00 AM until 6:00 PM on Saturday. They do not block access to leave the premises, of course, so folks can leave any time they like after hours.

WOW - Bob is coming out? Pink bird in hand too - COOL!!! And my partner no less... good deal! This is going to be fun.

I'd suggest that we plan to start the derby at 8:00 AM - that allows folks to get in the gate, socialize for a short while, and makes sure any stragglers have a chance to check in. We can fish until 3:00 PM, should give everyone plenty of time to build their bags, and then commence with the food and drinks. Sound like a plan?

sTony - are you coming? Hope so.

I just remembered hearing some time back that Lake Berryessa had a requirement for certification for any vessels that launch on the lake, and a search turned up the following link:

http://www.usbr.gov/mp/ccao/berryessa/d ... cation.pdf

Anyone launching probably wants to print and display a copy of the self-certification page just in case...

I had a slight change in plans, as I've decided to drive out tomorrow morning with Mona rather than heading out today - I have plenty to do to get ready anyway. We'll be there bright and shiney in the morning.

Hope to see a bunch of you out there!

8 Diehard Nutcases and 4 boats showed up yesterday morning at Berry to brave a bone chilling 24 degree wait at the Pleasure Cove ramp, BRRRRRRRRRRR! Turned out ta be an absolute gorgeous day on the water, amazingly, bites were far and few between. Our beloved Tunaman snuck past Bob Santora for the Top Nut honors, they each had the only 2 fish limits, Tuna's on a dropshot and Bob's on jigs. A couple of us had a 3 pounder, but couldn't find that second bite to over take em.

Once back at the ramp and off the water, we were greated by Mona(Tuna's hostess extrodinair!) with a mini spread fit fer kings in the wild. Good times people, if ya weren't there, ya missed it, if ya was, YOU ROCK!

We sure had a good time. Great idea to go to Berryessa, all three species was available.

Congrats to Tunaman- He drop-shotted the Pink bird in 45.7 ft for his fish. I should have waited until after the event to give him that bait.
Congrats to Wolfman for the numbnut…
I think Jay? Had the big nut honors.

Coochie and I had fuel injection issues and with 2 hrs left of fishing we figured we could run at 30 MPH as long as he lay on the back deck pumping fuel. Finally we get to his area and in 15 minutes I was looking at a 3 lb smallie. Gotta give him credit, he called a 3 lber there. I had caught my 2 fish as we popped in and out through the narrows. Had he had more time, he would have found another one in the grass but would have never got it in the boat. I was going to knock that sucker off or cut his line before that. You should have netted MY fish when I asked for the net. He just sat there and let me do the honors.

To all the guys that got birds, I have replacement hooks coming for you. Myself, Cooch or Gene at the Hook will have some this week.

Thanks Mona for the great food.

Johnny C and Angel, both you guys were correct on baits and patterns.

All fish were weighed on Cuccia's scale....

Clarification - there were actually 10 of us... Jim and Roy came out for the first time, but as they were new they didn't stick around for the morning briefing and missed the change in weigh-in time, and then must not have known about the social hour afterward and didn't get a chance to stay and enjoy the true reason for the Nutcase events.

FOLKS - the fishing is just an excuse to have these get togethers! The real deal is the social hour before launch, and the gathering afterward (unless you're Guyle and afraid of social interaction! ).

The day couldn't have been much better, aside from being a tadddddd nippy at launch. It really wasn't bad, and everyone appeared to have dressed appropriately so it was very tolerable. Once old Sol came up over the hill it started warming considerably and my mid-day layers were being rapidly peeled. Most of the rest of the country can only dream about such weather, and we got to go out and play in it!

Congratulations to Jay Barros for getting the Big Nut award! Jay is Wolfie's buddy, and a heck of a nice guy. Supposedly he has a WB screen name, but I couldn't find it among the membership in order to award the appropriate moniker.

Wolfie was designated the Numb Nut for bringing a small fish to the scale, and dumping it in the water before the length and weight could be validated. I swear that fish was 11" at best, but as I was digging out the Golden Rule to determine the actual measurement he dumped it in the water, and Bob cried foul and called the 'award'. Actually, the fact that this was the extent of Numb Nut nominations shows that everyone was on their toes this time around. I tried setting Coochie up, but apparently for some strange reason he checked the drags on his reels this time around (I've never seen him check his drags in all the times I've fished with him!).

Thanks to Tom for getting stuck with me... I warned him and gave him the option to fish with someone else, but unfortunately for him I was the only solo and he was stuck. Great guy, and had a wonderful time on the water, but unfortunately just couldn't get him a fish or three.

Thanks to Bob for finally getting me my pink bird - it has been promised for far too long! It will get great use this season, and I can't wait to show him pics of the double-digit I catch with it

Well, another one is in the books, and thanks to those who did come out to play. Love Berryessa, and love Pleasure Cove... great place to stay whether you're tent camping, RV'ing, or rent a cabin or houseboat.

Here are the official results:

Roger - 2 fish 3.21 total weight (2.07, 1.14)
Jay Barros - 1 fish 3.04 total weight
Bob Santora - 2 fish 2.25 total weight (1.13, 1.12)
Andy Cuccia - 1 fish 2.14 total weight
Rich Wolfe - 1 fish 0.75 (estimated, and SHORT!)

Great times had and can't wait for the Spring event! Oh, and isn't it the Top Nut who selects where the next event happens?!? :? :) :D  Any guesses where we will be doing the next one???

Another fantastic event. Too bad for you folks that couldn't make it. We had a great time as usual.

After a chilly morning start Jay and I tried some points in 45 feet of water but this Delta guy doesn't have a clue how to fish in water deeper than 12 feet, so we headed out to the main lake and some shallower water.
Jay hooks a nice 3 pound largemouth on a swimbait and then misses another a few casts later. It's getting late so we head back through the narrows so we won't have too far to run to be back by 2:00PM weigh in.

I put us on another point and we drift around into the cove. My dropshot rig gets hit and pull in a keeper spot. Get it into the live well and cast again. I decide to check the time and realize that we have 3 minutes to get back to the dock. Stow everything and blast toward the 5MPH zone and come off plane just behind Tunaman.

Time to weigh in the fish. Tunaman does the honors and Jay's fish is 3.04 and stood up for Big Nut; congrats partner. Mine is clearly a keeper, but nobody has a measuring stick so I mark it out on the dock put the fish back into the lake and get a tape measure. The fish was either 14 or 14.5 inches, maybe a little less. I was concerned for the fishes health, that's why I didn't want to stress it out with having it weighed.
That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

Thanks to Tunaman for hosting and serving as TD. Thanks to Tom A. for getting us motivated.
And a huge thanks to Mona. What a great spread. And thanks for tolerating this motley lot.

This is my kind of 'tournament' fishing. Great friends, great food, great fun. The payouts were just as advertized, the entry fee was perfect.

Can't wait until the next one. Spawn time on the Delta. yeehaw!!!

Roger has already indicated that the Spring NutCase will be on the Delta. We just need to pick a good day. Look forward to seeing you guys then, or sooner. If you head out for some fun fishing let me know.
