Floating hyacinth in Delta question
Floating hyacinth in Delta question
Is the hyacinth still floating all over the delta? I was up there in October and it was bad. Im planning on a trip in a few weeks to the Delta. Are there any areas that are weed free for the most part? Thanks for the help.

Nope. Most all of the hyacinth is dead and gone.

if you get back in the sloughs and look in most of the pockets, you'll see its still there. some of it is already starting to green up.

What you saw in the fall, is no longer present. The Hyacinth takes it's punishment in the winter. This was a very cold winter and thank God, as we had a very bad year last year with the Hyacinth. Yet, in as much as it has passed, there is more hyacinth decay floating around and bunched up in the tulles, than I have seen in many years. In this stuff, lies the dormant seed pods, the lil round bulb like pieces. Those pods, are gonna take off in May/June, and unless the various counties jump on it early(Which they DID NOT last year) this fall could be worse than last year.Dmbos72 wrote:Is the hyacinth still floating all over the delta? The natural Pond weed and Duck weed is in the same state, yet it doesn't float all over but sinks to the bottom. It's still present in some areas, but old and brown. The Perrywinkle, got choked out purty good by the Hyacinth last fall, yet it is the new, brilliant greeen stuff you'll see starting to go all over the River right now.
As far as weed free places, the entire Kellog Creek side of Disco Bay, is like a desert on the bottom due to last springs pellet program. Subsurface weed groth has fallen off all over too, due this extreme cold winter. It's great in some areas where it's sparse and bass are congregated in and around the clumps. In other areas, it's not as dense as years past, but it is in a decaying state where ya get that stringy, snoty green and black crap all over yer baits. Weeds are yer friend here, find the "good" weeds, you'll find plenty of bass!

Dept. of Boating and Waterways does a spraying program, but their Federal permit ran out in Oct 2011.
I figured Delta Keeper had filed another suit or something.
I have been working spraying a small canal with an on the water legal version of Roundup and can assure you this plant is a pain in the rear.
Under high temps, it can double in mass 5-10 days, but I swear it seems like it can double in three.
DBW spends 6.5 million a year in efforts to control it according to their website.

You both are exactly right. I thought they were just attracted to the blue Champion... Stupid *** bird's, I do my best to avoid them but still have taken at least 3 out with many other close bird dropping calls!!!brambo0311 wrote:Coots are either slower, or I got faster. The coots are the least of yer worries! Watch out fer them long necked white ones that are rustling in the trees right on the banks. Them nasty birds do not want ya anywhere near their bed room, and that male will leave his mate squaking, fly right at yer boat, pitch his arse right at ya and drop a gallon and a half of nasty white recycle fish SHAT, covering you and yer boat like a lemon merange pie!!

Any bird carries that much on board should be dubbed a WMD. What's the fine on dropping one of those? Might be worth it to not have to spend hours detailing my boat.Cooch wrote:The coots are the least of yer worries!
