hds7 questions for ken or marc

Post by kane-o »

i currently have a hds7 up front, a 28hd on the console. the hds7 up front has a 83/200 trolling motor puck ducer, and the 28hd has a 50/200 skimmer ducer on the transom. i also have a lss-1 mounted on the transom, and both units are interlinked with the nema 2000 system. i have another brand new hds7 with the power cord, ducer, mount, etc coming and i want to put the hds7 on the console and remove the 28hd... where do i start ? :? all new power cord and ducer, and another lss-1 cord connecting to the lss-1 box and hds7 ? i have had all the units installed, so this will be a first for me  thanks a lot guys

Replace the power cord with the new two wire cord that came with the HDS7. The NMEA network used to be powered via the third cable in the LCX power cords that was labeled NMEA. The NMEA network doesn't get it's power through the head unit like with the LCX units so you will need to be sure to install a power node. This is just a tee in the NMEA network with a hot and a ground coming out of the top of the tee that you connect to a power and ground source. This powers the NMEA network so devices connected to the network that need power can get it, like an external GPS antenna.

You will need to change out the bracket. The HDS units have different thread design on the knobs and bracket cogs are different.

The transducer you had on the LCX 28 will be fine for the HDS 7, no change here. Keep the one that came with the HDS unit for a spare.

You can connect both HDS units to the LSS-1. Use one of the ethernet cables to go from port 1 to the unit at the console and another ethernet cable from port 2 to the HDS unit at the bow.

It's not just another T. It's a power node. So it is a T with a hot and ground wire coming out the top. You have to use it to hook the network up to power with HDS units. In the past the LCX or LMS units could power the network. Really though if you are going with all HDS units and have no other NMEA devices, the utility is not that great. Each HDS unit has it's own GPS so no need to share GPS, the ethernet cords will update waypoints between units, so there really is no need for NMEA in your situation. I have mine hooked up since I had the same units as you but since I've gone to all HDS, I don't use the NMEA network anymore. If you think you might add temp, fuel, or an external antenna, then by all means keep the network. If not............not so much!

so i can just use the lss-1 to connect the 2 hds7's and use the internal gps's, and not use the nema system ? meaning i can remove the 3 - " T's " and just use a new power cord and a second lss-1 cord for the new hds7 ? maybe i should just take it in and have it installed ?? :(

That is exactly what you can do! The simplest system is one LSS box with 2 ethernet cables going out to each head unit. You can get rid of the NMEA network if you don't think you'll ever add any of the NMEA sensors or an external antenna. I would change out the power cord or at a minimum disconnect and tape off the NMEA power wires that were part of the LCX power cable. I wouldn't take it in for installation. Marc and Ken can get you set up and it's really not that hard to understand once you get used to it. Let me know if you have other questions, I've installed a bunch of them.
