Re: ken - your thots on this topic
I never use the fish symbol feature. I want real returns. The last post that talks about 4 foot long fish and not seeing a real return is false.
As long as an object is in the cone there will be a return on the screen. Let's say you are on a rock pile and not moving much trying to stay on the rocks and there is a fish suspended above the rocks. This is where you will see a straight line continue to be on the screen as it scrolls as long as that fish is under the boat in the cone giving the unit a return. As the fish moves out of the cone the mark will disappear. Since you are not moving the fish will appear as a straight line, not an arch. You need to be moving at 3 to 5 MPH and the fish will need to be directly under the boat to get the perfect "arch" of that fish. Most fish are in the cone somewhere but not in the perfect position to display the arch. Anything in the water between the boat and the bottom will show up on the screen and if the unit is set to show fish symbols then it's hard to tell what is what in the water. You can learn to distinguish between fish and suspended weeds floating under the boat in the water at the Delta for example.

ken -
i agree, i dont use the icons either, but what surprised me on that thread was the inference that on the hds that arches shown on the screens werent actual returns, but nothing but an icon shaped like an arch (just like the fish icons of old) with the size of the arch based upon an algorythm of the return.
i own 3 hds 7's and a long time lowrance user, so i am pretty committed to the company, but with the recent change to hds, maybe lowrance made some changes in the programming. can you check with your technical contacts at lowrance to see what the scoop is?
it would be nice to put to rest the rumors that were brought up in that thread.
thanks,

There are no "icons" or anything fabricated by software to create arches. Only something between the surface and the bottom will be shown on the screen and your speed will dictate how big or small the arch or mark will be.
