Hey guys,
I have an older boat (95 Skeeter 175 Merc motor) w/o hydraulic steering and I had a couple of questions. I know most would say not to add it as you're not going to see your money back if I was to sell it, but I just had my first child and I'm just thankful I still have a boat LOL! That being said it's pretty damn difficult at higher speeds to steer as you all know and I have been thinking about adding hydraulic steering.
I've seen some units for around $500 and that sounds like a decent price for an entry level system, but wanted to get some thoughts.
Who has done this?
What system did you go with (like/dislike)?
What was the ball park price (unit and installed)?
Was it worth it?
Thanks,
Mike

Mike, We do quite a few hydraulic steering installs here every year. Average price on a Seastar Hydraulic system installed is right around 1200.00. They are absosultely worth it. If you have any questions give us a call (530) 275-4939

Well worth it. I had it put in my 2000 Triton a few years back when the cable gave out. Don't know how I got along with out hyd. Steering. My Seastar unit installed was about 1200 and that was about 5 years ago.
I think a self install would not be too hard, depending on the boat. But either way I recommend going to Hyd Steering.

Here's a link to Seastar hydraulic steering installation manual. Everything you'll need is there.

If you can comprehend the installation procedures, you may want to give it a shot. It's quite involved but nothing you shouldn't be able to handle if you've worked on boats.
My suggestion is to have the pros do it though.
Good luck

I have an 87 champ and had hdy installed 15 years ago and no regrets. It's true, you'll never get back what you put into. Just look at all your equip and what it cost and what's it worth now. Makes handling the boat at all speed alot safer and well worth it.
