Retractable Rod Tie Downs

Post by dwise »

I've been thinking about installing retractable rod tie downs on my 1999 Champion. The one's I've looked at are made by Boat Buckle. My question is, has anyone here had experience with installing this product? Is it difficult to install? I would like it to be concealed in the gunwale as opposed to deck mounted.

they are not that bad to install. the hardest part is cutting the hole. make sure you have enough room under your cap for it if you are going to conceal it. I cut my hole with a cutting router bit on my dremel.

Does anyone make a surface mount unit that doesn't have to be recessed?

BassPro sells a RodBuckle product that has an adapter for surface mounting.

The same company, Boat Buckle makes an adapter so that the unit can be deck mounted, but I like the idea of concealing the until and only having the strap on the deck. I believe Jeff has these, so I will ask him how difficult it was to install. I'm a bit leary of cutting into my boat myself. It might be a good idea to have Lakeside install them for me.

This is how afraid I am to cut into my boat...I made Mark Poulson drill four screw holes for the rear rod tie down! I couldn't bring myself to drill four little screw holes! Geeeshh.....

Darlene, it is not hard to install. You would rather do the flush mount then surface mount. Makes it stick out on your deck more. Takes like 10 minutes a side, very easy!

Have Mark cut it out and install if your affraid.

But, but, but what if I slip, and put a hole all the way through my hull, and my boat sinks, and my insurance won't cover it, and, and, and....
