Navionics Mapping

Post by KirtH »

What are your thoughts on Navionics mapping? They have some neat features such Freshest Data and Community Layer. Anyone using them?

I think the freshest data feature is very innovative as the map data is updated regularly. Most mapping companies update their maps very infrequently but Navionics publishes their updates daily. I recently purchased a Navionics Platinum chart for my Humminbird 997 which came with a free download for their Navionics PC App and the updates to the maps load automatically when I open the program.

The community layer is an interesting idea for things like navigational hazards like wrecks on the Delta or submerged boulders on Folsom but Navionics will have to have some sort of monitoring process to ensure the accuracy of the community information.

The community layer on the Navionics mobile products (iphone, ipad, PC, etc.) forces users who want to add data, like wrecks or boulders (or anything else for that matter), to register with a varifiable email. The other "safeguard" is the entire community of users! What one person puts on another person can edit, move, or delete. Any abuse of the "User Generated Content (UGC) on the community layer can also be reported by anyone registered.

One of the coolest things about the community layer is that it can now be read/viewed on the Generation I & Generation II Lowrance HDS units!
