I've got a new 50E that was giving me problems at Shasta in April. It sounded like the spool was grinding upon casting and the distance was greatly reduced. I brought the reel home, pulled the spool and cleaned and oiled the bearings. I added new line but didn't use it until this past weekend. I was casting a light popper with 20lb braid and the grinding noise was still there but not a noticeable but the casting distance was again very reduced. I dropped it off at a Shimano certified repair center in Sacramento and they said it sounds and is functioning fine. But if they would mount it on a rod and cast it they will see what I mean. Does anyone know what the problem could be so I can give the reel guy a heads-up?
Thanks,
NoCAL
50E problem
Re: 50E problem
Tell them to cast the reel. They will be able to determine what is going on. It sounds like you have the spool tension set too loose which allows the spool to walk in the frame.
Re: 50E problem
That could be it. I was throwing very light lures so maybe the spool tension is set too low.
Thanks
