Punching tips !!!!!!!!
Punching tips !!!!!!!!
With all of the talk involving punching over the last few years there have been many posts that talk about equipment, gear, baits Etc. Often times i read these posts and there is a ton of good knowledge to be gained on these but i feel like the real questions that are most important are not touched upon. After a couple years of trying to punch i finally figured a few things out, and have started putting consistent fish in the boat. what i am getting at is we often times do not discuss the types of Mats and or grasses to punch. I was hoping i could get some feedback from everyone on types of cover if you will, where punching is most productive for you and share it thru this forum with all of the guys and gals looking into punching
In my experiences the hyacinth is good as well as debris piles of old tullies and the seams where two different mats or grasses meet.
I would love to hear from everyone their tips on mats and grasses to punch
Get out there and punch some fish because it can be a blast when it is on, high temps and bluebird skies this weekend should have them under the mats big time so go get em.
Sorry if this has been discussed a hundred times already i just have not seen them and i figured at the least a refresher would not hurt.
Thx

Re: Punching tips !!!!!!!!
Great topic. I've been focused on the punch bite and it's been hot and cold for me. Mostly because I've been exploring and trying to find the right ingredients, i.e. depth, water clarity, current etc. Just when I think I got it all figured out and apply the desired elements to a new area I blank and have start all over. As said in the OP, lots of info on the gear for punching but not much refreshment on the execution.

Revoke,
Boy do i know what you mean. I leave the house in the morning thinking bring it on KVD and on the ride home i'm stuck wondering which site's classifieds would be the best place to sell all of my gear.

Sorry for the hijack but twice I've been "practicing" punching in small ponds and after about 30/45 minutes my setup "just falls off" I'm thinking the snell knot slips over the eye and "poof!! Be gone" any help???????
Re: Punching tips !!!!!!!!
Check out some of Bub Tosh stuff on you tube. Bub is probably the most passionate punchers in the west.
Re: Punching tips !!!!!!!!
Make sure you are using a hook with the eye welded shut. Also check to make sure you are tying the snell correctly. Finally your tungston weight may be cutting your line.Dean89 wrote:Sorry for the hijack but twice I've been "practicing" punching in small ponds and after about 30/45 minutes my setup "just falls off" I'm thinking the snell knot slips over the eye and "poof!! You can also "weld" the eye shut by tying a palomar knot onto the hook, cutting the line off, sliding the palomar down to the gap where the hook eye turns back to the shank, and putting drop of crazy glue on the cut off knot.Dean89 wrote:Sorry for the hijack but twice I've been "practicing" punching in small ponds and after about 30/45 minutes my setup "just falls off" I'm thinking the snell knot slips over the eye and "poof!! Then rety again, and you should be fine.
Also be sure you're using heavy enough braid. Under 50lb is too thin, so it slips through the smallest gaps.

Re: Punching tips !!!!!!!!
Did anybody catch the Future Pro show over the weekend.
it featured Alan Fong and Zack Thompson on punching. It was awesome and one of the best FP's I've seen yet.
They were extremely detailed and informative.
They mentioned one of the most overlooked types of cover on the delta, which are the moving mats. The chunk of mat that floats around and becomes lodged against something temporarily. The best ones are isolated from other cover and most have lots of empty space below them. Whenever your cruising around and you spot a solitary patch stuck against the rip rap, hit it. These have always been one of my favorites. I was surprised that Alan and Zack mentioned them. They are mostly overlooked but worth a stop.
