Oroville Turkey Shoot Last Night

Post by cleb19 »

Well I have been doing these turkey shoots for awhile now and It finally paid off, Last night I had a plan to throw just some particular baits and it paid off, I ended up catching a 23" 7.1 pound Largemouth Awesome fish, Oroville is really starting to turn around with the Largemouth's I hope they keep coming, now if I could only get one of those in a Tourny :D I think the next closest fish was 18 1/2

Contracts. Can't wait to see the picture.

That is a pig for this time of year at Oroville. Any tips? I am meeting a buddy from Texas this Friday for a day trip before I come back to work the Cast for Kids deal at Del Valle on Saturday.

We plan on throwing topwater early, then drag a 3/4 oz football jig and worms the rest of the day. Maybe even mix in a little swimbait early/late. How deep was the big girl?

Thanks in advance.

Yeah I saw the fish a couple of weeks ago spawning, I spend a lot of time on the lake lol, but anyways I saw here in a spot up north where big fish frequent and I tryed to get her then but she wasnt quite locked on. So last night I ran up there thinking she just got done spawning and she wanted to fill her belly and get back deep so my hunch was right I made a long cast and got a couple of cranks into my retrieve and I got slammed, when she came up I quickly asked for the net, it was a great fish, healthy as can be, ill get the pic uip soon she would of been a lot heavier if she was still full of eggs, on the day trip it sounds you got the right idea, all thjose baits are good, good luck let me know how you do, and thanks G-man it is nice to get a BIG surprise when your not expecting it, oh yeah I also had a 19 inch fish that I couldnt measure because I had here next time Ill bring a paying partner :D

Great catch CLEB, just remember that your partner must catch the other fish, If you catch a 19" and 18" fish your partner is not supposed to bring it in as his catch. This is an honor system thing. Last year my buddy and I fished the tuesdays and I had a 17 1/4" and he had a 22 1/8". Right after the big girl he caught an 18 1/2" and tried to put it in the well and throw mine back. I was having nothing to do with that, he was frustrated but understood that I would not waiver from the rules one bit (anyone that knows me, knows this) sincerely, JB..... Goodluck and good fishin......

QUESTION;
WHAT DO THEY USE TO WEIGH THE FISH ON........
WE ARE THINKING OF JUST USING THE BERKLEY 50 LB HANGING SCALE ???

is that sufficiant enough ???

Hmm I thought they were coming up. Ive been catching about 70 fish per trip over the last couple months. Up until two weeks ago one of the 400 or so fish Ive cought was a lg mouth. The last couple trips out Ive boated about 30 out of the 140 or so. My 5.22 pounder came in about 10 feet of water. Lets get out there!

JRS... If your gonna fish Friday, I'd suggest throwing a LV500 in American Shad or the Pearl Ayu. The last 3 or 4 trips up there, I've been consistantly boating spots in the 17-20" range throwing this bait off of long shallow points and rock. The Aruku Shad baits work very good also (1/2 the cost). You can drag worms and jigs all day and land 100 fish, but only a handful will be overs. I was up last Wednesday for a couple hours and managed 7 overs, the best 5 would have probably gone 16+. This bait has been on fire for me for the last month. As far as Largemouth, they are out there, but this time of year you'll have to find the right structure and get lucky with hooking up. I'm shooting for a 16 pounder next time... LOL

Thanks for the info Cleb19 and 492Slayer.

I will let by buddy from Texas catch all the dinks with worms/jigs and I will thow the Lv's all day after the topwater bite slows down.

Thanks again for the tips.

Watch out for that jig. It got me second a couple weeks ago on that lake with a 5.22 kicker. :) Should have been first but one of my largies died

Thanks for the heads up biteme.

Maybe I will just lay out a few "teaser" drop shot rods for him and keep the jig rod on my side of the boat (right next to the LV's, swimbaits, and topwater rods).

We always end up competing for something (dinner, drinks, casino night, or if he really get's cocky maybe the fees for the next trip to Lake Fork).

For a 1 fish turkey shoot -
You can just balance beam the ones that are close. That's the way they do it at Clear Lake on Wednesday nights.

Good Reading!!!

I enjoyed reading all these posts about the quality bass during your turkey shoots! Just to add, as already mentioned, don't overlook jigs in Aug-Sept. The good quality bass will nail those in late summer sometimes. One thinks you have to wait for cooler water - but not always!!!!
