If you could bring a defunct lure back to the market...

Post by Caudawg »

If you could bring a lure back from the past that is no longer manufactured...or is now manufactured by a different company but not as well... what lure would that be? (feel free to share currently manufactured lures with a discontinued color you'd love to see come back.

I'll start with one of my favorite crankbaits: Bagley's DB-3 in Bone/Orange Belly. The Bagley's company is being re-launched by new ownership (who know what they are doing, I think!) ...but Bone/Orange belly is not yet on the color chart from what I have seen.

Note: I was sponsored by Poe's years ago but there were times that the Bagley's DB-3 was still a favorite go-to bait

Some of the QC has slacked on Hudds. But I think the bite ratio has more to do with the amount of guys that throw the Hudd. Its seems everyone throws a Hudd today, and most fish in our lakes have seen one or two in their lifetime.

I miss the Specialty Tackle Junior D. Great crank with very small size and it presented that small profile in deeper water than most small cranks.

I agree that the HUDD is being thrown every where and the fish see it a lot. But I still feel like its your best chance at catching a giant. The bait just has everything needed to make truley giant fish eat a lure but the new, mass poured baits are just not the same. And yes I would love to see Ken make some knew stuff, bigger, better, or whatever. That dude KNOWS how to make amazing baits

Hey Dockboy,

ABT makes the X2 Mini now that is an improved version of the Junior D. Same small profile, hooks dont tangle on this one and has same knocker/weight transfer system and actualy dives about a foot deeper.

Check it out. It will be your new fav!

This is an intriguing topic. My vote is for the bayou boogie in all sizes. As for the punker difference, I would like to talk to you about the differences you speak of. I could better serve you with more details and would be happy to hear your opinion and experiences. Send me a pm with your contact info. Thanks.

The sad thing with Super kPork going out of business is Robin was the only source for custom pork trailers like the obsolete Pedigo L3 , L4 and others. You should be able to find Super Pork on the self somewhere at a discounted price, only a handfull of angers fish pork trailers today.

The one thing about soft plastics is you can always find a custom hand pour to duplicate obsolete hand pours like Josh Upton. It's the injection molded worms like the Action worm with all the fine details that can't be replaced without expensive tooling.

Kane-o I agree I found a black and red storm wiggle wart on the delta in the rocks about 4 weeks ago I decided to tie that thing on 2 week ends ago and I tore em up on that bait the rear hook was changed out but other then that it looked stock. I out fished my son he was throwing a black red speed trap 5 to 1 amazing baits I never thru em back in the day but came home and bought 3 of the same baits (not the rapala one but the storms) off ebay new in pack :) The speed trap use to be my goto showloow water bait not no more :)

Quick note on the Warts and Speed Trap.

The Wiggle Warts became a better lure due to wear on the injection molds. They became a bit more off balance and worked great. Rapala bought Storm and built new molds killing the action of it.

This was discovered by Tom Seward as he was studying Warts to create a new lure for Worden's called a "Fatfish" not a typo it is not a "Flatfish". It has some like profile but has the wide slow wobble that the original Wart lost. He explained this task of coming up with a new lure that cycled slowly for Salmon was a challange as his more recent work was high frequency vibration and tight action with a high cyclic rate during retrieve.

The Speed Trap which he also designed, ran into trouble not just from being built in other places, but by Lure Jensens attempts to improve lure durability due to complaints. He had already left that company, but evaluated the new improved Speed Trap and told me, "They just ate that mold, just killed the action of the lure..." He was not happy, but it was his baby anymore. .02 A.G.

I do remember the Speed trap story and it was a catch 22 I remember throwing the OG speed traps and they worked great but man one small smack on a delta levee rock and CRACK! Or the lip broke and een back then at 5 bucks a pop they got exspensive . Then they made em more durable and you are right they dont fish the same . Thanks for the info on the Warts I think i am gonna buy a few more :)

dom, i have quite a collection of pre rapala warts and mag warts, around 25 of them.... boxes are storm brand.. hard to find.. i found a good source and can usually get them for $5.00 and some $10... but some of them are going for $25 ea. been finding myself buying a lot of them and other vintage lures too.. love the warts though !! even have some n.i.b. chug bugs.. also storm, pre rapala.. if you google vintage lures you can find some amazing stuff.. things you never knew existed.. some as far back as early 1900's.. very cool..

Dom,

I know a few things about the Timber Tiger series of baits having fished for Y.B.C. or Worden's and got a chance to work with Tom Seward as a Pro-Staffer.

Think of them as Speed Traps that evolved. They have like features, and more.

But, I think going on about them would derail this thread further.

A.G.

Should be perfect for next year.

I kind of liked Culprit Softy craws.

Then I got into Guido Bugs which I have a ton of.

Wonder if they are shooting Culprit Craws?

And then for awhile Culprit was putting some fuzzy stuff in the worms, so the fish couldn't spit it, like velcro on fish teeth..... :D
