Favorite crankbait rods?
What are your favorite crankbait rods? Fiberglass or Graphite? Lamiglas, Loomis, St Croix...etc?
Re: Favorite crankbait rods?
I have tried, St Croix, Team Diawa, BPS, and Lamiglas. To date the Lamiglas Crank-n-blade is the best I have used. I wouldn't leave home with out atleast one in my boat.
Don't ask about my username, all I need to say is check yours and check them often.

Re: Favorite crankbait rods?
I must agree on the Lamiglass (the butt ugly yellow) Skeet Reese series. I have about 20 Glx Loomis rods and all of my cranking rods are lamiglass. Love them. As many of you know, I am a crankbait throwing fool on the Delta and have no problems hooking, keeping or swinging big bass with it. Besides at the price they are you can offord a Calcutta GT TE reel to put on it. (AWSUM ste up)
And no, i am not sponsored by lamiglass, just my opinion, and I could go on forever on crankbaits but i will spare ya all.

Re: Favorite crankbait rods?
I have tried quite a few rods and I really like the 7' Kistler
Graphite Plus 7' Md Crankin' Graphite
I like the graphite when throwing big rattle traps in the Delta, I can feel the grass in the deeper water real good and it has just enough give with solid back bone for throwing big baits and fighting bigger fish.

Re: Favorite crankbait rods?
I'm also committed to cranking. I have used those Butt Ugly Yellow Lamiglas rods to throw lipless crankbaits but have not tried them with the other lipped types. I take it you prefer fiberglass over graphite? Do you prefer the 705R or 705C model?
Re: Favorite crankbait rods?
I cast my vote for Loomis' CBR845 for general cranking and the CBR843 for smaller lures...
Re: Favorite crankbait rods?
I have been throwing DD10 and similar baits with my Skeet Reese Lamiglas and I like it a lot. I caught a 12lb striper last week while using it for ripping a pointer 127 and it performed great. I did lose a big fish to the grass though because I didn't have enough muscle to pull it out.
So Mark, I hear your going pro this year.....

Loomis cbr 845 for general cranking and cbr847 for lipless baits in the weeds,it doesnt get much better than these 2 rods.

706 Seeker 7' and 6'6" glass . I have have three and love them for cranks up to and including DD14, Poes 300, pointer 100, and super spooks. But I don't use them for lipless baits.

Re: Favorite crankbait rods?
Hey Mark, Im using the 705c Lamiglass. here is why i personaly prefer Glass over graphite. Graphite rods are great for there sensitivity. Almost to great for throwing Crankbaits and reaction type baits. When throwing cranks on graphite you have tendency to react much quicker to a bite, causing a lot of missed fish or fish hooked on just the back hook, making it easier to throw your bait.
Sometimes you will tell yourself, man there just swipping at it.
With a glass rod ( especialy the 705 Skeet Reese series) they are just sensitive enough to feel everything your bait is doing, BUT when a fish hits your bait the softer tip of a glass rod helps give just a split second more time for the fish to inhale your bait before you react to it. Therefore the hook-up ratio from fish hooked on the front hook as aposed to the back hook goes up a considerable amount, meaning more fish in the boat, and less chance for a Large fish to throw your bait( especialy a lipless bait). Too, the new 705s have great back bone for hauling in a big fish once it is caught or ripping a crank out of the grass. As i said befor i can go on and on and on about cranking but i will stop here. If anybody has any further questions please dont hesitate to PM me. It gives me more reason to talk about it
Good luck and crank a biggun.

Re: Favorite crankbait rods?
To honest with you I havent tried the 847 for spooks I use for lipless baits 1/2ozs and bigger and dd22`s,I`m sure it would work well though.I was using a rogue for my spooks untill I picked up the Powell 734,this rod works extremely well for spooks.Blue_R70 wrote:billythekidd44,

Re: Favorite crankbait rods?
I have a Powell CB684 cranking/ripping rod and love the thing. It is awesome for topwater, ripping (even very small baits), small to medium diving cranks, etc. I mainly use mine for inshore Snook fishing throwing a Yo Zuri Banana boat or the small Yo Zuri 3D fingerling....that is a small plug too, and it handles it nicely. The rod is quite soft but has a strong backbone, which is super important when fishing under docks for Snook. For just Bass cranking, I would probably opt for the CB704 because it has a little longer length for those long casts necessary for certain cranks to run deep.

Re: Vince B.
Wow, that might really ring true! I have notice for the past couple of years whether I am throwing a speed trap or a rattle trap, point, cranks I have not missed many fish but they always seem to be hooked on the back hooks. I don't set, I sweep my rod when I feel a bite. So I may be doing just that pulling the bait to soon.
But back when I was fishing Comp Edge Rods (ones by Rich F) I had about 4 of the Cranking rods (fiberglass I am pretty sure) and it seemed the fish would just inheal the bait.
I always just thought they were short striking. I will pay more attention and switch it up to fiberglass and test the theory.
Thanks for the helpful info!!

Re: Favorite crankbait rods?
Cooch's catfish rod is made from the same blank as the Skeet Reese ugly yellow rod. I usually make it in black. I also use the Seeker 706 but the guides are straight. The price is better than the factory rods.

Came across some new Skeet Reese crankbait rods offered at 40% off (closeout). Check with Salty's Bait & Tackle in Sausalito 415 332-4200.
Re: Favorite crankbait rods?
I know you were asking billy but I thought I'd jump in. I crank with the Loomis CBR845 and love it but I use it for Spooks, Buzzbaits and even blades with braid or flouro and it works great. 90% of what I catch is on the front hook (goes for cranking as well) the rest seems to be evenly split between being fouled hooked or hooked on a back or trailer hook.Blue_R70 wrote:billythekidd44,

I hope to someday get the CBR756 (6'3") for throwing the spook and heavier blades.
Re: Favorite crankbait rods?
I use the CBR845 for general cranking/ripping and once in a while for Super Spooks. I was wondering how folks like the heavier 847 for the heavier sized Spooks...EGBASS wrote:I know you were asking billy but I thought I'd jump in. The CBR756 seems like it'd be a good choice for Super Spooks but I'm not that fond of rods shorter than 6'6.
Hard ta beat that Custom Lami by Steve!
Most amazing crankin rod I've ever used. Versatile too, blades, buzzers and rippen, I can do it all very comfortabley with these Lami rods he's made for me. The biggest difference in his crankin rods compaired to any other crankin rod built today, is the 11 guide system. Most guys will never comprehend the difference until they have this thing in their hands.
We can think what we want of the high dollar, mass produced, proffessional sponsored, store bought rods, you will never truly experience "the best" until you try a custom build rod by guys like Steve or Jeff Skaggs. These guys put detailed passion and experience into each rod they build themselves.
