HDS7 Gen2 problem with structure scan

Post by Bill Talley »

Hey everyone, last week I had my HDS7 Gen2 with structure scan installed. Took my boat up to Berryessa yesterday, everything worked but the structure scan? That night I went onto youtube lowrance and noticed several set-up videos on structure scan, so this morning got out in the boat, ran through setting up structure scan just like the video said to do and I noticed on the LSS-1, the power light wasn't on? called Lowrance, they said to check for power to the LSS-1 which I did, and I have power to the unit. The people at Lowrance said that there are two yellow wires that need to be hooked together, got under dash and hooked them together, still no power light? This is my first HDS unit and still learning about it, has anyone ran across this problem, sure could use some help. Thanks BT 707-580-6422

OK found the problem, had a LCX-27c, moved it to the front and installed the HDS on the rear. The shop that installed the unit used the old power cable from the LCX and put the power cable from the HDS on the front unit?? That's why my structure scan wasn't turning on, both yellow wires were not connected. Shop ordered me another power cable for the Gen2 problem solved :) The shop hasn't installed a new Gen2 unit before, they are making it right for me and they learned something new. Thanks for all of your help guys. BT

You need to make sure that the ground (black) and hot (red) wires are properly connected in both power cables, the one for the HDS unit and the one for the Structure Scan module. Then take the yellow wires from each power cable and connect them to each other, nothing else. What this does is when you turn on the HDS unit, then the Structure Scan module is turned on at the same time. The power button for the HDS unit becomes the power button for the Structure Scan too.

FYI, though I don't recommend it, the power cables from the LCX units do work with HDS units, so your shop is wrong about that. The difference in the cables is the older style had an extra power wire in the harness for the NEMA2000 network, but otherwise they are the same and will work.

Also, the Gen2 units use the exact same power cable as the Gen1 units, so your shop is still confused.

Your problem was the yellow wire in the StructureScan power cable harness. It must be installed to a 12v power source. It can be to your HDS power cable yellow wire as Ken mentioned, but this means that HDS unit must be powered on for the StructureScan box to power on. While this works for most, if you want to use your bow HDS only, with StructureScan, and your StructureScan box has its yellow wire connected to the yellow of your console unit, then you MUST have your console HDS powered on for you to read StructureScan on the bow HDS unit.

I recommend connecting the StructureScan yellow wire to a separate 12v accessory switch. This allows you to operate the box independent of the each HDS unit, and also allows you to shut off the StructureScan box when not using it, while still running your HDS units.

Sounds like your shop isn't reading the Lowrance installation manuals...
