Fluro to braid Question
Fluro to braid Question
Do any of you use hi vis braid or does everyone use the green. What braid do you use for spinning rods
Re: Fluro to braid uestion
On spinning, I use 15# Daiwa Samurai braid, green, with an 8# fluro leader.

How long of a fluorocarbon leader do you use and what knot do you tie for the leader?

Four foot leader with Albright knot for meswfongdds wrote:How long of a fluorocarbon leader do you use and what knot do you tie for the leader?
Re: Fluro to braid uestion
I use a bit longer leader......probably more like 8-10 feet. I definitely use the Alberto knot. It's a modified Albright, fast to tie, strong as heck!!
I use Invisi-Braid 15#.......to a "depending on the situation # flouro leader" There's times I've used 6#, there's times I'll use 7# or 8#, and even 12#. Sorry.......just depends if I'm throwing a drop-shot more around open cover, versus more brush up shallow. Experiment around with it.
Good luck!

At last years Bass-A-Thon, Brent Ehrler (sp) said to make the leader just long enough that the knot doesn't get wound onto the spool, about 7'+-. He said that will eliminate braid tip wrapping.

Re: Fluro to braid uestion
Brent Ehrler stretches his arms out 1.5 times to get the right leader length of about 7'. I have to stretch my arms out 2 full times to get the same amount of leader length.
The knot I use is what Brent Ehrler uses, which is a double uni knot. Wrap the braid 12 times and wrap the fluro 5 times then cinch it up. Once you reel up all the slack, the knot should end up somewhere between your reel and the first guide.
Since using this set up, I have not had to deal with line twist in my drop shot rig, plus it saves bunches of money because I only use 7' of fluro at a time instead of winding all fluro onto my reel, and the braid lasts a very long time so I don't change it out very often.

Thank you for all the helpful input. I usually use 6 lb fluoro for dropshotting, but end up re-spooling within 2 or 3 fishing trips as the line just gets too twisted.
Re: Fluro to braid uestion
Who's Brent Ehrler?
J/K! Ha ha.
When you're running all fluoro on your egg-beater, one thing you can do to help free yourself from the "twisties" is try taking your worm off and make a couple/few long casts. This should help for a while, then just do it again. And, one other thing I used to do is cut my hook and sinker off, let out a crap load of line and idle the boat for a minute. This allows the line to really untwist, and you'd be surprised at how much bare line will pull on your rod when it's way out there. During a tournament, this is probably not feasible, but if your out just fun-fishing, give it a try.
On the braid to fluoro leader deal, the only reason I put on a little longer leader is because I'll re-tie several times throughout the day, so I just want the extra line there so I'm covered. I will say though, I've never really had any issues if I have the knot end in the spool. The Alberto knot is fairly sleek in profile so it's not like there's a real issue. It flies right though my guides just fine too. I could understand it being an issue when using heavier braid, and heavier fluoro.....so I see Brent's suggestion being a good one.
I have heard that some will drop a little glue on the knot too for added insurance. I used to use the double uni-knot, but I think the Alberto knot is actually stronger......and it's way faster to tie.
Hope this helps.

Re: Fluro to braid Question
I've come back into a lost love of fishing spinning rods the past few weeks here on the Delta. With the cool northern winds and the slow progression of "to the bank" movent by our fish here to spawn, the dropshot has once again become a very viable and deadly tool at catching BIG BASS!
I got my hands on a couple of Dobyns 692 Savy Spinning rods, teamed up with Shimano Sedona spinning reels. I initially spooled them up with 12# Nanofil braid in March for clients ta use ta chuck crankbaits and chatter baits. Worked extremely well for those tactics. A few weeks ago, out of the blue I decided to rig up a dropshot for a client on one of these set ups. Using an Albright knot, I attached a 6 foot leader of Yamamoto's 20# Sugoi fluorocarbon with a #1 round bend Re-Barb hook for weedless applications.
For over three weeks now, I have been amazed at the catch rate and "fish in the boat" success using this set up. We are man handling fish ranging from 6-14 pounds with this set up and have lost only a couple of fish due to mishandling during the fight. That Nanofil is amazing teamed with the Sugoi fluoro. These Delta fish DO NOT care that it's 20# test and I have had ZERO fish lost mishaps and failures with that Albright knot. The fish pictured below were all caught here with this set up! I fergot how fun it was to fish a spinning rod fer BIG bass!

Re: Fluro to braid Question
Thanks everyone. I just wanted to try the high vis is it didn't spook the fish. Eyes are getting older you know. But then again if the wires on the A-rig doesn't spook them nothing should

Re: Fluro to braid Question
Lookup the "modified albright not"
I believe it's called the "alberto" knot
Here's a link to a youtube video:

I don't double up the braid as shown in this video. I just make a loop with the fluoro, drop the braid down in, proceed with 6-7 wraps one direction, then 6-7 wraps back, run the braid back through, wet the line, sinch, cut tags, done.

Re: Fluro to braid Question
I use the Albright knot with Suffix 12lb braid to triline 8-6lb fluorcarbon, for leader length I run it so that it stops about 2-3" from the spool, with my bait in the casting position so its approx 6.5-7' of flurocarbon. The reason being is I hate retieing the connection knot on the water and I can do several hook reties before having to retie my connection. I have used the same braid in my spool for two years, that suffix braid is limp, wax free and does not loop up or have a memory by far the best braid for spinning that i have encountered.

Re: Fluro to braid Question
Been using yellow Power Pro for about 8 years now on all my spinning rigs. I can see the line of the guy in the back of the boat and the fish sure don't care. I know guys like different knots but I have had zero issues with the Uni to Uni on 10 & 15 lb braid to 8 to 15 lb fluorocarbon. One interesting note, had a guy show up with the red power pro and I thought, man, that really shows up on the reel! Unless the sunlight hit it just right, I thought it was just as hard to see as the green!

Re: Fluro to braid Question
Hey Rb,
Have you looked at the Berkley Nanofil? It is a superline designed for spinning reels. It's the next generation in fishing line.
With Nanofil it's easier to cast longer even with lighter bait presentations and it doesn't make a lot of noise going through
the line guides. When using it for a drop shot rig have you tried using a small barrel swivel instead of the Uni not?
I have found that most of the time when using a uni not, when you break a fish off it because of the line breaking off at the uni not.
Here's a link to check out Berkley's "Nanofil" line. http://www.berkley-fishing.com/products ... nt/nanofil
I hope this helps you the next time your out fishing.

Re: Fluro to braid Question
I tried Nanofil with a fluoro leader on my spinning reels for drop shot and split shot, and found it coils almost as badly as fluoro.
