OROVILLE, Ca. - Just like the men that traversed the hills and mountains surrounding Lake Oroville looking for quality pockets of precious minerals during the gold rush period of 1849, come this Saturday, in the Future Pro Tour’s final event of the 2013 season, you will also find hundreds of anglers scouring Oroville Lake’s various coves, creeks, and canyons looking for quality pockets of “green gold” they can convert into a trip to the winners circle and the healthy cash purse that comes with it.
This final event of the season for the Coors Light Future Pro Tour dubbed “The Gold Rush Run” will see yet another big field of anglers eager to blast off from Lake Oroville’s massive spillway ramp, and onto the areas they have been scouting and “pre-fishing” on for over the past few weeks.
A while the lake has been hit hard by various events over the past month, the wonderful thing about this giant reservoir is that it holds tons of catchable fish – especially in the fall. But ask anyone that knows anything about Lake Oroville and they will quickly tell you that “catching” fish is not the issue, as 40 to 60 fish days are fairly common. The challenge for this weekend’s anglers is finding the quality pockets of fish that will make a difference and help them break away from the pack.
“Oroville is a thinking man’s lake”, noted Jeff Boundy who competing with his dad and team partner Bill Boundy, currently sit just outside of the FPT Classic qualifying bubble. It’s easy to get caught up on having fun because you can and will catch tons and tons of keepers. But to win, or score high in this competition, you have to focus on where you think the quality pockets of fish are”.

The BIG Nugget
And digging around to find pockets of quality fish that could place a team high in the standings or even garner a victory, is not the only thing at stake in this competition, as FPT competitors have a much bigger bounty to dig for, and that big nugget is qualifying for the 2013 Future Pro Tour Classic Championship.
For everyone in the field knows fully well that only 50 of the best teams from the northern region, and 78 teams TOTAL - will comprise the field in the prestigious year-end championship event that will be held March 7-9th of 2014 on Clear Lake, and that the winner of that event will receive the keys to a brand new Ranger Z118, powered by Evinrude 150-ETec, and loaded with Minnkota, Humminbird, and Navionics electronics – all expertly rigged by C&C Marine of Modesto/Citrus Heights, and valued at over $35,000.
Add to this the lifetime bragging rights the winning team will receive from a Classic victory, and you have the formula for anticipation and excitement that will make this year’s season ending event one not soon forgotten!
Coors Light-Silver Bullet AOY race too close to call
The race for the inaugural Coors Light-Silver Bullet Angler of the Year title and Coors Light Rookie of the Year titles are races too close to call as Stacy Gee and Rafael Ortiz will surely do their best to fend off Austin Wilson and Jose Juarez, who sit a mere 2 points behind them in what has easily become the closest Angler of the Year race in the Future Pro Tour’s 11-year history. Both teams say they have their “issues” with Oroville, and are extremely nervous about how everything will play out…so stay tuned!
If you have never fished a FPT event now is your chance as it is not too late to sign up over the, or via our online process. We will also be taking late signs at the spillway ramp beginning at 4am on Saturday, with limited membership fees of just $5 dollars per angler available to those that may want to try us out or can only make this event.
As we always say....we can't guarantee that you will catch fish, but we can guarantee that you will have a bunch of fun trying!
