Re: CLOSED FACE REELS
Learned all about bass fishing using a Zebco 33 and the Zebco Scotty 66..As a matter of fact if you start your youngsters on a closed face, it will be a lot easier to convert them to a baitcaster..I haven't owned any, but Daiwa also has some pretty good closed face reels, especially their light and ultra-light models..

Re: CLOSED FACE REELS
I used them for pitching, although at the time I just thought of it as short casting..Flipping didn't really exist at the time, but I see no reason they could not be used for that technique..The biggest drawback in my opinion to either use is that the reels are not designed for real heavy line, that you might want to use for flipping or pitching to heavy cover..

Re: CLOSED FACE REELS
I have the Zebco Omega, Plantinum 33, Diawa Goldcast GC100, Abu Garcia Abumatic new drag and the old star drag system for my son. So, here you go. The Omega is nice but the Platinum 33 is just as nice and half the price. The GC100 is real nice, good drag system but still a little pricey. The Abumatics are nice and carry a good price. I like the new drag system versus the old star drag but both reels have caight several nice bass and trout. I used the GC100 on Oroville and had a few 50 fish days with dartheads. I hooked'em and he reeled 'em. I spooled them with 8# McCoy. The GC100 has also caught a couple of Delta 5 lbs'ers. That's what happens when you are handling business out of the back of the boat and tell him to watch the front of the boat. All of the line on the reels have gotten "jacked up" one time or another. I was told Trilene XL or Easy Cast works the best with those reels.
Re: CLOSED FACE REELS
Daiwa Gold Cast is by far the best. My lady friend doesn't have arm strength for a baitcaster, and don't like an open face because it "hangs from the bottom of the rod". They have an oscillating spool so the the line doesn't dig in. Drag no good, so she had to learn to back-reel and "bow to the fish". She uses 15# Power Pro line. She's got 5 or 6 of them, had them several years and none have failed. On these reels, she's caught a lot of fish over 5# and one over 10#, and outcatches me more I would would want to admit. I think they're still $47.95 in Cabela's. Another thing is that she's very accurate with her casts and feathers the line as it comes off the reel and stops it on target. E-mail me if you want to know how she does tthis.
There She Is!!!
Re: CLOSED FACE REELS
This past year Zebco has gone through and redone all of their Zebco product IE; the ol Zebco 33. They have totally rebuilt them from the ground up ... the closed face reels are better than ever ... do some research and you will see check them out on line or go to a dealer and talk with them ...
Their professional "Omega" Zebco line is awesome, 6 stainless steel ball-bearings,(the only one on the market)continuous anti-Reverse, quick change spool system, Ultra-smooth worm-gear drive, levelwind oscillating spool Diecast one piece alum. body and foot ... check them out ... its great stuff...
They even make a Zebco 33 salt water version!
