i just bought a 1999 ranger r83 and it has a gen 1 hds 5 at the console and no electronics up front,
i am new to boating with electronics, what model should i get for the front, or should i put the hds5 up front and something else at the console, the boat is already rigged up front with transducer and wiring for lowrance, i just have to mount and plug in. i want to start doing some competitive fishing like clubs or some of the team stuff like fpt, bbt...etc, is it worth it to get a more expensive unit with side scan and all that, or will something for a few hundred work well enough?
thanks matt

First of all, welcome to tournament fishing!!! If you plan to fish derbies, you need the best unit you can afford. You will be competing against other anglers who have the top end units and really know how to use them. Get a big unit like a HDS 10, so you can split the screen and fish off shore. Also, be sure to invest in a Navionics chip, it will give you a huge advantage. Best of luck, and see you out on tour. T. Lain

Which ever you decide make sure that you get a Navionics chart/chip to enhance your mapping opportunities. You can learn more about the charts by visiting www.navionics.com or youtube navionics page. The chart make a difference in terms of learning what is under the water.
