Clear Lake this week......August 9th

Week of August 9, 2014

Current water level as of August 10th is .42 Rumsey, and releases have actually increased to 7 cubic feet per second. Not sure what that’s all about. The included photo shows what .42 Rumsey looks like at the Clark’s Island Bridge in the Keys. Despite the low water conditions the water itself is in pristine condition for this time of year. Absolutely the best we’ve seen in a number of years. Algae? What algae?

Now, with regards to the fishing; to say the expectations with this latest moon were disappointing is an understatement, both from my personal experiences and from the reports given to me by others.

Carl Keller from clearlakebassguide.com reports an extremely tough bite as well. Carl reports 19 anglers managed to bring just 7 fish to the scales this past week at the Wednesday Night Shootout which went of Lakeport. That’s definitely not the norm.

This week the WNS will be going out of the Clearlake Oaks facility and is scheduled to run 5:30p to 9:30p. This is a great time and fun event if you’re ever up at the lake on a Wednesday.

As for myself, I hitched a ride with a friend this week for 2 half days on the lake. One was an early morning excursion, the other a mid- morning to late afternoon attempt.

Day one 6 am, we decide to go ledge fishing in an attempt to find the jig bite with little to no reward. Change to a chatter bait, crank, and swim bait…NOTHING, and ended up with a mere 4 or 5 bites for our efforts.

Then around noon, with 20 minutes left before we had to get off, I make one last stop and decide to start working a frog tight to the bank. I mean in a foot of water. First cast, BOOM! Then my partner hooks one, and I get 3 more blow ups with 2 more fish.
Dang, time to go! No problem, we’ll be back here Sunday.

Day two, Sunday 10 am, we start where we left off on day one but the dang breeze is blowing the opposite direction, as a result it’s not pushing the bait to the bank. Never fails! However, the fish are still there busting on the bait so let’s just see if they’re still willing to play? Nope, no takers on the frog, but over the next couple of hours my buddy does whack a half dozen on a spinner bait.

Ok, so we start moving around in an attempt to duplicate this blade bite….Ah, but be careful what you ask for as they say….at best it worked to the tune of 1 fish per stop! Usually within the first 4 or 5 casts, then another 20 minutes of grinding it out, then on to the next spot.

Oh well, that’s why it’s called fishing I guess. Off the water at 4pm with a grand total of 10 fish.

Areas fished this past week were mid-lake, the narrows, Konocti Bay, and the Rattlesnake arm. All loaded with bait, but like I said, one area is no better than the other right now. One here and one there, with a lot of zero’s in between. Hopefully, this coming week gets much better! Stay tuned.....

I have been fishing clear lake every saturday for about the last mouth. Got 4th in BBT event with 21.39 and first the following weekend with 26.49. I also fished sat. evening with my team partner i had 23 lbs or so alone. The bite has been pretty good if your hitting the right areas, the rattle snake arm and the redbud arm are good. Since they killed off a good part of the grass spend your time around the little bits that are left. These fish are using the grass in 2-4 feet to come up and feed, then moving back to the deeper water. Its all about timing. I wouldnt leave an area without going over it at least 3 to 4 times. All of are fish have came after making mutiple passes through the same weed line. We havent been catching more than 5-10 fish a day, but we have caught more than enough fish over 5 lbs. Hope that helps a bit.
