Starter company Reckless baits! CHECK THEM OUT!

A buddy of mine just started his own tackle company Reckless Baits, for those of you that are into the garage type/handmade tackle be sure to check him out and give him a shot his baits really are the best I've fished with and he has put a lot of detail into everything. He has everything from terminal tackle to every type of jig you can think of, and an awesome little thru line swimbait that I've personally been catching fish on all over the NorCal lakes(Berry, Clear Lake and Oroville). The products do look nice. My question is what makes the jigs different from the majority of existing products out there? Also what makes the swim bait perform better than say a CRL Toad Thrasher? The majority of fisherman stick to their normal products. I am not trying to start a brand fight but I am interested from a sales perspective what is going to make them sell better than existing companies.

Redneck078, those are all valid questions. I guess you wouldn’t say they are the best because you can’t really call anything the “best,” so its not that necessarily the “best” but that they are different. He has been making me a few friends a lot of our tackle for years and we have all been very happy with it so he is deciding to branch out, its not a get rich quick deal simply a hobby he wants to now share with everyone. As you can tell from the website he is also cheaper than most companies out there, but I can promise you that has nothing to do with the quality.

Most of the products made by the big companies are mass produced and just slapped together, where in his case he sits down and makes a quality jig one at a time and pays attention to the details. As far as the jigs are concerned, its not that they are better and going to catch anymore fish than the competitors but they are of equal if not better quality than most. Everything he paints is baked so they last a long time, from the terminal tackle to the jigs. The footballs jigs are all very cool but yes like you pointed out, they are similar to most others however they are built with quality components. The jig I would say stands out from most is his swimjig, there are very few like it. One of the common problems with swimjigs is they come with way too much material and very bulky, or they have cheap hooks that flex, or the weedguards are either too stiff or not stiff enough. The swimjig he makes his a handtied half wire skirt, it is not bulky and flares and has action like few others, the hooks are very sharp and will not give, and I think has found the right weedguards as well. He is finishing getting up the info on the vibrating jigs but he wants to get them up soon, they have been a great bait for me and some friends so stay tuned.

I am a big fan of his line thru but like I said its not that its better than others just that its different, it something new to lakes that the fish haven’t seen and whether you are a tournament fisherman or weekend angler it doesn’t matter that usually means more fish at the end of your line. He did a few cool things with it, the eyes are made into the bait so unlike most companies one eye wont fall off after 10 casts and then the other one shortly after, they will NEVER come off. Most people throw away the hook the bait comes with and use their own preferred brand so his doesn’t come with one just a suggested size so you are free to use your own, which in turn cut down your price. And the action really is good in has bigger fins than most line thru’s so it has a different look than most once you put them in the water, I’ve caught fish everywhere I’ve thrown it.

So basically its not that I meant anything he had was the “best” just that it was different and of good quality, and available at a better price than most. I’m not saying go buy them I was just giving a little promotion for a good friend and suggesting to give him a shot, I don’t think anybody will be disappointed.

That actually answered my questions nicely. Its nice to see someone take the time and explain the differences between products that by just a glance can look the same. That was a nice write up and it sounds like its a product worth looking into.

Talked to him this afternoon, Zman has asked him to liquidate his stock and stop selling his chatterbaits so get them while you can, at the time he only had around 40 left.

Bought a few chatterbaits and swimbaits from Jake. And they worked great on the delta and clearlake the last few trips. I talked to him and he is a real stand up guy that believes in his baits and puts great detail into every bait. Everyone of the baits are handmade and are checked for flaws he only sends out his best products every time. Reckless is definitely worth a try you won't be let down by these great handmade baits. Keep up the great work Jake.
