Any advise on Clear Lake

Post by scaldwell »

We will be coming to Clear Lake on 04-14-2006 from Idaho. Any advise on where and what to fish. We only have 3-4 days to fish, any advise would be greatly appreciated. Thanks S Caldwell

May be a little early for advice due to the weather we've been having. As we speak the North end is muddy and the south end is a bit clearer and probably a better choice with a prespawn pattern going on (ledges and deeper docks).
Water is finally starting to warm (from 50 last week to 52/53 yesterday, still has a way to go).

That being said, it can change an awful lot by the 14th. I recommend that on Wednesday night you go in and "bump" your message up if it isn't already near the top to get the latest.

A couple of the guys that post here live on Clear Lake and may offer you a chance to PM them.

I'm fishing tomorrow, so I'll let you know how its going, at least down south.

My opinion is that its about to bust wide open and a couple/few days of good weather during the middle of next week and you may be hitting it just right!

It will bust wide open

Post by ash »

Yeah on MONDAY HAR! Just as JP said the fishing is all about the temps, coming in on the 14th there is a good possability that you will be here right when this lake busts open for the season. Sorry there isnt better info, keep checking the reports and weather that will help keep you dialed into what is going on up there.

I say the first day go with a guide, then you'll have more fun the next days. It is a big lake and would be a shame for you to run around 2 or 3 days getting dialed in.

I've been out twice with Bob Myskey http://fishclearlake.com/ there are many others.

Have a dinner at The Saw Shop.

"I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll go with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

I second the guide advice. If Myskey isn't available call Bob Thein. You can get his number or email him at www.bobtheinguide.com
Sometimes he will do half day trips if you don't want to pop for the whole day. He will defintely put you in the right area.

I'll second the Bob Thein recommendation. Been out with him 3 times. He knows the lake and if fish are biting, he'll know about it and put you on them. He does do half day trips as well.

You can also contact Cooch at www.coochsfishing.com and see if he has a day available on the big natural pond. He can put you on fish, as well as either Bob (Myskey or Thien). Good Luck and invest in the guide, it will be well worth your time and money.

Thanks for the info. Any suggestions on travel, we will be traveling from Idaho through Reno, would it be better to stay on I-80 or cut off on highway 20 ?

From Reno, I would travel 395 west to Susanville, then take hwy 36 to Red Bluff, then I-5 to williams turnoff onto 20 into Clear lake and stay around clear lake at a place. The Konocti Vista Casino is good, as you have docks, rooms, food and all right there. Even hookups for RV, if you are going that way. 1-800-386-1950 Bill K :)

Bill, Thank-you, We do have reservations at Konocti vista. Looks like we chose the right spot to stay? Hopefully the rain will let up a little so we can enjoy some fishing!!!! P.S Susanville is a great place to live. We used live between Weaverville and Eureka on Highway 299 a long time ago.

I would make sure you bring a few Staysee 90's, especially in the ghost minnow pattern. Check out my report from today, had a blast once I found the first few fish. And let this bait sit after a few rips...that is key.

Unfortunately I was alone on the pond again today. My sons decided not to get up...kids....jeesh. Anyhow if any of you would like to fish sometime send me a PM and we'll see what we can work out. Although I don't have your standard bass fishing rig, you can easily take a nap on my vessel when the fishing gets slow

Hatred...hehe...yep ALL of the hits I had today were quite savage. Several chased it right up to the boat before hammering it.

Lots of fun, no doubt :D :D

Since your staying at KVC, go see Ross at Tackle It,
1050 N. Main Street, Lakeport, CA 95453 707-262-1233. You can git all the baits and info you need from Ross and his great staff. Ross is also a great Clear Lake guide if you're interested in doing a guided trip one of the days.

Thanks everyone for the advise. I will need all I can get. Is the weather improving over there any? We finally had a good day today, the sun was out, no wind or rain, but the fishing wasnt so hot. Oh well can't complain, I was on the water. :D :)

I live in Lakeport and will spend several days on the water between now and then. Hopefully, we will start seeing some bed fish sometime soon. If you like you can email me at editor@basswest.com right before you come up and I will gladly tell you anything I know!

If you are staying at Konocti Vista Casino... you defintely want to have dinner at TNT's near the 5th street Launch Ramp right in downtown... or try Q and Brew in downtown lakeport as well.

A guide is a great choice.... I know Bob Myskie is on the water several hundred times a year and may even know each fish by name!

You are in for a treat on the #1 bass lake in the country!

One thing I neglected to ask is how were you planning on fishing? From a boat or from shore?

Getting a guide for the first 4 hours of your very first day is ABSOLUTELY ideal, if you can afford it. Make sure you let the guide know that you're interested in being taught the best way to catch them for the days you're at the lake.

Even if you don't get a guide you can use this site to figure out key areas and techniques to use pretty easily. One other tip I'll give you is to take FULL advantage of this sites history capabilities both here in the forums and (more importantly) in the fishing reports area. Going back a few years and reading how and where folks caught um in the past is priceless. Having a decent map of the lake will help as well as you read about days, ways and places folks caught fish in the past. I've spent hours doing this type of on-line "fishing" here and it's payed off HUGELY. (And don't forget about the TV area and all the shows made on the lake as well....all viewable on-line....)

We will be taking our boat, and I dont know if we will be able to use a guide or not, maybe one of us could go. Money is kind of an issue, but on the other hand it would stink to spend all that money to go and not catch many fish either. :?

I sent you a PM but MAKE sure you take Tom up on his e-mail offer as he is right there. Good luck with your trip its an awesome place to go to, it really has an aura all its own.

Speaking of which Tom, would you mind if I e-mailed you before I come up on the 28th of this month. I haven't had the success up there that I'd like to have (as a boater, good as a non-boater) and more importantly have struggled to get my 11 year son on fish. The two times he's been out on Clear Lake I've only caught two fish and he hasn't caught any. I usually have him drop shotting or split shotting.

I'm considering putting a trip together to Clear Lake also. Driving over from Las Vegas. Fished Clear Lake twice before, but many years ago. Appreciate reading the helpful comments. Definitely on a budget as I recover from a toe operation. Maybe a 10 - 12 day visit right after Easter Holiday. Probably camp at the State Park, but every 2 days will need a battery charge for the Skeeter's TM batteries. In the past I've used a RV slot in some campground. Any recommendations for an RV campground in the Clear Lake area?

Someone coming to Lake Mead? I'd definitely reciprocate.

Thanks, Tom

Better still...

...I believe that if you stay at the KVC campground, you can leave your boat in one of their great (free) slips. BTW - Each slip has its own electrical outlet.

Thanks Ron and Gary,

Undoubtably hanging out on the Internet more than is condusive to getting stuff done. Checked out some alternate low cost RV camps around the area and have some idea where to get that sip of electricity. What with price of gas in CA - 3.09 to 2.98 in Needles and Blythe last week - cost of fuel can make RV charges even out.
