Dobyns Rod Question

Post by Stratos278 »

Let me start out by stating that I have pretty much committed to Dobyns for all my future rod purchases. I know that there are lots of folks loyal to their own favorites, but like I said I am staying with Dobyns so please don't chime in trying to convert me to Phenix, iRod, Powell, etc. Now, with that in mind, I am considering a new rod for throwing large topwaters and wake baits such as Super Spooks, Lunker Punkers, Slammers, and so on. Would like to stay in the 7' 3" to 7' 6" range. Any recommendations?

First off THANKS being a customer!!!

As stated we did just release a 796 SBMT. We needed this rod mainly to fill in for the bigger Glide baits that have become popular. We also have the 795 SBMT ( Swim Bait - Mag Top water ) rod in the line. It has a 10 inch handle to make walking bigger baits easier. The New 796 has 12" handle. I wanted it shorter and played with lengths of 10", 11 1/2", and settled on the 12" length. The baits are getting heavier and heavier and the slightly shorter handle did not feel right. We asked several guys for input and let them try samples before deciding. I like the length of 7'9" because I can build more action into the rod and get a good "load" on the cast. The shorter rods felt like broom stick when I put enough power into them for the heavier baits and they just didn't "feel" good to me.

Long rant but letting you know how I arrived at these models. I will say a 7'6" model could be done but I just haven't had requests for it until now.

THX AGAIN!!!

It wont throw the punkers and slammers, but the 706cb is my favorite super spook rod. It will throw that bait incredibly well, walks easily and has a great parabolic bend for when a big fish surges close to the boat. I dont lose fish on that rod.

Yeah it sound like you need two different rods here. For spooks I love the 764c. Very versatile Rod you can double as a chatterbait, spinnerbait, small swimbaits and rattle trap Rod.

For the punker and slammers you can use the 795 SBMT

I also like the 764c. I use it a lot for the smaller wake baits like the Mikey and it works great but you can also use it for many other applications including the spook. My favorite rod for the spook and baits like the whopper plopper is a 735c. Also great for open water frogs. I fish the Delta a lot and can throw a ton of different baits on these rods. For the much larger baits you'll need a bigger rod. Like Mike said probably need a couple. Big weight difference between a Punker and a spook. Good Luck

Correction on my post above. The handle length on 796 SBMT is 11 1/2" I tried these in all lengths but wanted to keep it as short as possible for working the Mag Top water walking baits. I dropped it back to 11 1/2" for production run......I screwed up yesterday's post saying it was 12"

As always, I'm at shop to answer rod questions most days. Richard Dobyns and Dan Wells can answer just as well too. Yell if we can help 530-671-1989

Thanks for everyone's input. I think that eventually I will spring for the 796 SBMT for wake/glide/swim baits, but for now I will use my Savvy 735C that I was using as my jig rod. I can use my 766Flip for jigs as well as flipping. As far as a topwater (Spook) rod, I think I see a 706CB in my future..
