Gene,
I heard you are no longer affiliated with the hook, is that true?

I suppose change is inevitable, what can you do? To me Gene is the Hook will always be that way in my mind.

20 years ago I parked my motorcycles and stopped racing; I was 40 then. I decided to take up a new hobby; fishing and specifically bass fishing. You could argue that 20 years later I still hardly know how to catch them but who cares. It's been a blessing and an adventure thus far.

Back in the beginning I obviously needed a boat and bought an 18' tin boat, a walk through console to a very small front deck. She had a 115 horse Merc but I felt like I was the King. I launched out of Big Break and the Hook was located there in those days. There was a cast of characters that hung around and of course Gene held court. One day he asked if I wanted to fish a tournament; that he had a low key event he himself sponsored and I should give it a try.

Once again it's been 20 years since all those events happened and Gene; its all your fault.
It's your fault I have 20 rod and reel combo's and enough tackle to open my own store.
It's your fault I have a 21' bass boat with a 250 and enough electronics to land a rover on the moon.

So in case I forgot to tell you over the last 20 years, thanks Gene!

And I still remember how you came up with some unique stories to tell your wife why you needed certain items especially your first bass boat. I have many memories like you and many friends because of the Hook.
You have to have more then 20 rods!!

YOUR WELCOME

very sad to say, The hook was you. I can remember the first time we meant, feb 1994, just moved down from redding, wanted to learn bass fishing and you hooked me up with a legend Dee Thomas, my guide trip was a bass tournament, we finished 2nd, guess I was ruined for life, I bought my first bass boat from you, and over the years have spend 1000"s of dollars with you, , but whats most important to me, is are friendship, you always treated me fair and square, The Hook will never be the same, but times change that's for sure, I always be there for you, a friend always Steve Adams

Retail is a people business and it's not easy either you have it or you don't! The only way you can build a solid business is by how you treat your customers and Gene was the Hook line and Sinker!
I remember doing a tournament when the hook was at Big Break and I was having issues with my trolling motor I came back in early and ran up to the shop and told Gene he grabbed a hand full of tools locked the shop and came down to the dock and fixed it for me and sent me back out on the water and when I asked him what I owed him he said buy me a beer! I will never forget that and he gained my loyalty ever since!
Over the years he would inquire about my son and with all the customers he would see daily I don't know how he could remember I had a son but he made feel like a friend not a customer! Gene your top shelf in my book!

take care!

I can still see your face when you told me you were going to be a dad, grinning from ear to ear.
The other one I remember very well is Garrett Bradshaw, his parents stop at the old Hook on their way home from the hospital to show him off
