Mercury Engine Life

Post by Kizzane »

I have a 1998 mercury EFI 150hp that runs great, I have owned it for 6 years and have never used any type of engine internal cleaner or fuel additive. My question is does anybody have any suggestions to pro long the life of the engine and use such of cleaners/additives? And actually use a product not just mention a product because they are sponsored by a company. Or if it's running fine don't mess with it??? I do change spark plugs and filters yearly

Thanks in advance

I've used Mercury Quickleen for the past 12 years on my 95' Merc XR6 150, i've never had fouled plugs or any negative issues using it. I add it everytime I fuel up.

Mercury/Quicksilver #1 QuickCare every fill up 1 oz. per 10 gallons its about 14.00 per 16 oz. The #2 QuickCleen use every three or four tanks.cost about same as #1

You may notice at times after running the quick cleen you may foul 1 or more plugs since in there to clean combustion areas ect.

I add Sta-Bil Ethanol formula to my fuel, 1oz per 10 gallons. I have also heard a lot of folks recommend adding Seafoam to control/remove carbon build-up. I imagine these are very similar to the additives recommended by Norcalracer

one thing to check is the oil line that runs from the oil reservoir on the engine to what I believe is the oil pump, came off on my '96 150, running straight gas, fried it.I guess it's not uncommon for it to happen, people get rid of the reservoir & mix their gas.Thought mine would run forever

I have a 2008 Optimax 200 hp engine and I have used Stabil Marine since the beginning. I haven't had any fuel issues or plug fouling, but recently my hole shot didn't seem to be a fast as when the boat was new. Quickleen fixed the hole shot in one tank. I used the Quickleen on my old 1997 200 EFI with success also.

why would you mix your gas in the tank running 50 to 1 all the time when oil injection would meter it down to less oil when not needed and not fouling your plugs thus burning less oil? why aviod oil injection?
the best way to catch a big one is don't lose um sharp hooks set drag retie!

Tho engines don't last forever, you can extend the life by TAKING CARE OF IT !! By this, I mean regular service, use the PROPER oil (forget about Walmart), use the CORRECT gasoline, (NO ethanol) use a fuel additive EACH fuel up (this keeps the pistons clean from carbon build-up which will also burn valves) Mercury and Yamaha and Evinrude each make one, CHANGE the impeller YEARLY, NEVER take off with a COLD engine, ESPECIALLY in cold weather, warm it up, especially on those cold mornings/days, then SLOWLY take off. and always, did I say ALWAYS, yeah I did, run a WATER SEPARATOR !!
I've seen engines BLOW at 100hrs due to misuse and some go at 900hrs with care. You be the judge as to when you want to spend that $8000+ for a rebuild or $15000+for a new motor. Yeah I know, sometimes something goes wrong, it happens ! (Hopefully under warranty, but if misuse is diagnosed, warranty won't cover it) But why would you want to run the risk ??
I like to gamble, but only at the TABLES !!

A good place to buy quickcare/quiklean is veradoclubparts.com. its $18 or $22 per 32oz bottle. I buy them in bulk so I don't run out as its not cheap buying in the small bottles
