Lake Chabot 12ber

Post by Big Rick KFOG »

I was trout fishing at Lake Chabot next to these guys yeserday, they ended up catching a 12 bass on trout gear (a kastmaster). It was really short and fat. Looks like it grew up in a shoebox!

Here's their report:

"I'm going out to fish," Simon Peter told them, and they said, "We'll go with you." So they went out and got into the boat, but that night they caught nothing.

Time to bone up on the regs guys. All fish in CA must be taken by angling. Angling is defined as the fish willfully taking the lure inside it's mouth. Translation, if you foul hook a fish you have to release it, its ILLEGAL to keep it, doesn't matter what species it is or if it was accidental or not. What a waste of a great fish :(

cv, Doctor, or swimbait do you guys feel like posting over on that board? I never saw the fish hooked, but I did see it take a hard run into some trees and fight there. I was on the other side of the tree from these guys so I didn't see anything, but yes not many 12# bass go for Kastmasters.

These guys fish for trout alot at Chabot, and didn't know what kind of fish it was, a couple of people mentioned to weigh it and take pictures, but they didn't. The guy is really cool and was fishing with his 2 boys, his oldest "caught" the fish. If you let him know of both protocol and regulations I'm sure he and his kids will take it to heart. I don't think he reads this board.

I'm on that board and I said a little something.
Thats about the saddest picture I've seen of a monster bass, all jacked up and dead.

Swimbait,
The regs seem a bit unclear in how they are applied. I have always understood that snagging fish is clearly illegal, however I also understood if a fish attempted to strike the bait and was hooked that was a legal manner of taking a fish. I've seen this rule applied in some tournements and it was also discussed recently with the Weakley fish from Dixon Lake. Also the rules don't mention a second rod which is legal in some circumstances. I guess maybethe regs are just a bit vague?

I agree that it seems a little vague because they don't define snagging per se, but think about it this way...

If you were down below Nimbus dam fishing for salmon and accidentally snagged a salmon in the top of the head and kept it, what would happen if DFG saw you do it?

The answer is, you'd get a ticket every time no quesitons about it, and there's nothing in the regs that says its any different for bass or any other freshwater species.

Think about it this way also... If DFG allowed people to keep fish that were hooked outside the mouth as long as it was on accident, how would wardens enforce it? If that was legal, people could snag bass off beds and even if the warden saw them pull the fish up on to the shore snagged, the person doing it could just say oh, it wasn't intentional.

Swimbait,
I think your interpretation is spot on, I guess the only question I have that seems contradictory to the regs would be allowing a fish to be considered "legal" for purposes of a tournament and to be kept if it was in the act of striking at the bait, around the outside of the mouth. Maybe tournaments disallow these fish now.

Am I the only one that thinks this fish looks like a world record redear sunfish?
