Has anyone started throwing topwater yet?

Post by Ray L. »

The reason I am asking is because while I was at the Delta I caught a couple of fish on a Super spook. While they did not help my limit it got me to thinking. Would our local fish eat topwater early in the spring like the fish do up north?

Wow this is interesting. I am wondering how many others try it early in the year down here.

Up here in the north there is really very little time of the year has to do with throwing a topwater bait. So many baits to choose from and different species to target but I can safely tell you I almost always have one form or another of top water bait ready to go near year round. We've been throwing frogs up here for nearly a couple of months now and spooks are good to go on a near year round basis thanks to the spotted bass on some lakes and especially late winter on the Delta. Ricos and Pop-Rs are also a bait that doesn't get used nearly enough but some fish will definitely eat them already.

Man, I love a topwater bite, nuthin' better I can think of doing.

Hey Tony I am glad to see it was nothing major with the boat. I sure do want to say thanks again for your help because you got him out of my boat. He will drive you nuts if he is on the back deck all day.

Been trying pretty hard down here in San Diego in the evenings, but it's warming up slowly. Here is one from exactly one month ago on my new go to bait for topwater (mistakenly first reported as a horny toad, but realized later it was a Stanley 'Ribbit':

Image

I got two on it at Barrett Wednesday, one in the sun at 2 p.m. on a whim (spot looked too good not to have a fish under the weeds, picked up the pole, tossed it on the weeds, pulled it one foot into clear water and bammo, a nice 2 pounder pulled in. 5 minutes later, got slammed under a tree nearby but lost him. Got another a while later bringing it along open bank. In the p.m. suprisingly no action on it though. The spook has worked a bit in the evenings, but it's not wide open yet.

All I need to get into the money would be the four I usually get along with a 20# kicker.

Hey Socal...another "el norte' " here, and Stony is right! Don't put it away! We catch nice ribit fish year round (shhh!) Anywhere big fish live shallow, they feed shallow. Got a nice 7lbr in early March at clearlake on a froggy, water temp 49 degrees!

You guys up north have it a little bit better than us. I think you can catch Spots on topwater year round. I do know in Az. there are times in the winter you can catch topwater but in So. Cal. the fish seam to just go deep. Maybe I will start this winter trying a little topwater.
