Should be a good time, taking a break from the post spawn largemouth for a bit.
I've got my pencil poppers and big spooks at the ready, both rigged with 30 lb Power Pro. I've got a big saltwater Yozuri jerkbait tied on as well. Gonna throw a Hudd around a bit too. Any other suggestions?? A camera? Got it.
first and foremost, I'd highly recommend you check at least a couple wind reports for that area before you leave !
I have been hearing about how windy that place can get for years, but about 3 weeks ago I drove right beside San Luis, while on my way from one trophy Largemouth lake to another.
Now keep in mind, there was only a slight breeze at the lake I had left from, and only a slight breeze with a small chop, at the pond I arived at 40 miles to the East...... but while driving past San Luis in between, it was rolling like the ocean ! I can't even imagine what the place looks like on a day when its fairly windy !
All that said, what a GREAT looking lake ! All those square miles of clean, clear water ! Heck, just on my drive by the place, I saw so many great looking spots, long tapering points, humps, partially submerged (but living) trees ! It just looked like the trophy Largemouth dream lake...... but apparently, the Stripers dominate in that place.... plus, if they did try to feed the bass (hatchery trout) the Stripers would surely beat them to the punch.
Good luck.... and be very careful / safe out there if you go,
Peace,
Fish
Call 1-800-805-4805 for the wind. It will save you a trip. The wind has been as always this time of year kinda touchy. This is clear water and subtle topwaters & rip baits shine this time of year. Big topwaters and SB's have there place here at times and will catch fish but subtle baits and good presentation will catch more. 3" flies catch 20lb stripers here regularly. Noisey clanking trolling motors put em down a mile away too. Most importantly, you will need to find bait to find the quality stripers. If the stripers stump you, go looking for LM. There is a good population of largemouth and some searching is all it takes. Take the time and READ the warnings at the lake. No joke.
Good advise from David call that number before you go.I called this morning and it was 3-12 mph, perfect, but call tomarrow and it will be 17-32 mph.
I fished it Monday before last and we cought all the fish you wanted just nothing over 4 1/2lbs.We used Spook's and Lucky Craft Pointer's and Zume Super Fluke's.Fish toward's Portragiez Cove in the flat's on your right below the windmill's but like i said not big fish but on medium spinning gear alot of fun.
You said > I fished it Monday before last and we cought all the fish you wanted just nothing over 4 1/2lbs <
Just out of curiosity (really long drive for me) were those fish Stripers, or Largemouths that you caught ? Either way, since you fish the place, do you / have you heard of any BIG Largemouths from there ? 10's ? 13's ?
Then again, I can't imagine what they would eat.... if they didn't get eaten first.

All Striper's but that is what we were fishing for. There are Largemouth in there but i believe they are all northern's.We do catch them while fishing for Striper's but your best bet for the largemouth would be down below the dam in the Forebay.I personally have never cought a largemouth over 4lb's there.
There are Trout there also becouse i have cought them, year's ago,so who know's.
