will rainbows eat bass fry?
will rainbows eat bass fry?
Anyone know if stocked trout will eat fry on a small lake?
Re: will rainbows eat bass fry?
I don't see why not, they eat minnows
Re: will rainbows eat bass fry?
While piscivory is less common in rainbow in comparison to brown trout, they can be quite predacious and there is no reason why bass fry, or fry of any species, wouldn't be on the menu. Particularly, if it is a small lake and there is limited forage base. I've actually caught some of my biggest rainbows and browns on trout pattern baits!

I got a good laugh when an estimated 10lb. stocker brown trout at DVL tracked my 8" Hudd and ate it at the boat. I lost it because it didn't fully engulf the bait, but I wasn't too mad because the large 5 lb. plus rainbows that I have caught on worms and reaction baits have been very delicate.MGJR wrote:While piscivory is less common in rainbow in comparison to brown trout, they can be quite predacious and there is no reason why bass fry, or fry of any species, wouldn't be on the menu. Growing up we’d camp at Lake Amador. They sold live minnows years ago. We would buy a few dozen and go crappie fishing at night off the main dock with floating water spotlights. The crappie fishing was phenomenal but believe it or not we’d always catch a couple big rainbows with the minnows. Loads of fun!

I fish for smallies 99% of the time. It just happens that these lakes have lot of trout. I caught a nice on on a 5in swim bait, one on a S waver, a bunch on crankbaits and a few on poppers. My last one was 4lbs. I have the trout guys asking what Im using lol. So yeah I would think so.

Yes, trout are predators like bass are and young of the year fish of any type small enough are prey.

We can't keep trout off of our hooks when we use crankbaits, jerkbaits, lipless crankbaits, small swimbaits, senkos, and the worst is drop-shot. We catch them on everything...you name it. They will eat anything moving and I'm sure that includes bass fry.

Many years ago when I ate bass besides lots of crawdads I found an occasional 2-3 inch catfish in their bellies.
