Is the gps feature worth it?

Post by ken »

How much do you use the gps while fishing if you know the water? My old console locator(bottom line) finally quit and thought I would get a new one similar to the eagle 480 that is on the deck. I have been looking at the lowrance 332c and the garmin 398 but wonder if it is worth the additional cost of the gps and chips. I fish the delta and camanche lake weekly and can see where the gps feature locating islands would be some help, but on the delta ??? Your input please on how much you use the gps and what to buy? thanks in advance, Ken

Definitely worth it to me. I use mine to mark specific loactions, such as a small area in Franks or the break where I want to return to.

Next question, What chips or cards do you recommend to go with the lowrance 332c for the delta and camanche. Looks to me like you need 2 different ones, correct? ken

Ken,
I have a LCX 19C on my dash..I love it...The GPS Feature is a definate must have. I recently purchased cards for both northern Cal Lakes and the Delta. Unbelieveable info and contours for the delta. As for the lakes the info is so so. You might want to check out the newer units I:e LCX 26Hd which I believe already contains the map info.Cabelas has this unit on sale for about 700.00.Also the Delta Chip gives you tidal info which is kinda cool. I would have upgraded to this unit if the wires were compatible unfortunatly I have the gray connectors on my harness. The new connectors are blue. The other thing is you can go to just about any lake on your unit...and view info from your boat seat. I've done this numerous times....My neighbors thought I was crazy sitting behind the wheel until they found out I was looking at Clear Lake or the Delta on my GPS while sitting infront of my home in Oakland.

LMAO - When I got my LMS-480, I did the same thing - mounted it in the boat - pulled the boat into the driveway and started playing with the GPS. My neighbors gave me some strang looks until the next door neighbor came over and asked. Then he spent about 10 minutes looking over the GPS features with me.

One of the best investments you could make!

It's useful, to not only locate island tops, but sight fish, use as a navigational tool and great for bad weather. It's also helpful to help you make out your Delta "milk" run as you chase the tide.

Good luck!
