Lesson Learned!

Post by Mike »

I've been fishing for 35 years and have never had a hook in me (past the barb) until today! I was at my house rigging my rods to go out tomorrow, reached into my locker to grab a box of baits and WHAM! One on the baits that I had hanging in the locker snagged in my finger! Ouch. It stuck in my nuckle on my right hand all the way in! I grabbed some plires and tried to pull it strait out....Not! It was really stuck in there, then I started to think the barb might be catching a tendond or something, so I had to poke it all the way through. Then I thought, hey get my camera! (check out photo section) then I got a pair of dikes and tried to cut the hook but was not strong enough with my left hand to cut it! Yes I was home alone! So I used the dikes to smash down the barb and finally backed out the hook. Thats when it started to hurt! I washed it out and put on a spiderman band-aid and now I'm all better. :) So a fishing I will go.

So you guys that hang your baits in your lockers might want to think twice.

Mike, with your tip for the day!

THERES A BETTER WAY TO DO THAT . IT HAS TO DO WITH A LOOP OF MONO AND PRESSING THE HOOK EYE DOWN AND YANKING ON THE LOOP . NO NEED TO PUSH IT THROUGH.. HAPPENED TO MY PARTNER AT EL SALTO IN JANUARY ..WORKS FINE ALSO JUST PUT A DROP ON CRAZY ( OR FISHING) GLUE ON CUT AND THAT SEALS IT RIGHT UP .. MAYBE SOMEONE HERE CAN GIVE YOU A LINK TO AN ILLISTRATION OF THIS HOOK REMOVEL METHOD. I'LL SEE IF I CAN FIND IT ..BOB G

Kinda hard to do them tricks with only my left hand available. I pulled pretty hard and it wouldn't come back out. So I had to poke it all of the way through. Thats the part that sucked!

Mike,

Man there just has to be a better way to get red hooks on those crank baits. If it will help any I'll give you a bunch.

See your folks should have told you that Bass Fishing was character building.

Ouch! I feel for ya.

Ive been to the hospital four times getting hooks out. The worst was when I had a spinnerbait stuck right where the skull meats the meat of your neck. The hook was buried as far as possible. At first it hurt, then it got numb. Once it got numb I tried with all my might to pull it out. I coultdnt get it out. So off to the hospital I went. In the ER everybody was staring at me cause I had this thing hanging out of my head, I was embarrassed.

Anyway, things happen.

Mike,

Hope your feeling better after that mess! Reminded me of a time @ pedro fishing a team tournament with my son, set the hook on a trash pocket bass on a rico topwater first thing in the morning. The lure missed the Bass and found my thigh all hooks well past the barb. I couldn't pull em out and was bleeding all over the boat so we cut off the lure and finished the tournament. went to Doctor's memorial in modesto and ran into a old salmon boat skipper ER doc who lidocaned up the area and ripped em out. Saw Bobby Barrack with a 5/0 hook sticking out of his eyebrow a few years back at a tournament. Thank god for antibiotics, booze and a dose of humility we get through these things! HAR!
