Zinke cheered President Trump’s memorandum on western water

WASHINGTON – U.S. Secretary of the Interior Ryan Zinke cheered President Trump’s memorandum on western water last week. The memorandum directs the Department of the Interior and the Department of Commerce to work together to deliver western communities the water supplies they need to irrigate millions of acres of farmland and provide water and power to millions of Americans.

“Water is the lifeblood of any thriving economy, and its importance in the West cannot be overstated,” said Secretary Zinke. “We want to use water in the most practical sense, and make sure our water infrastructure is in world class shape for all uses. Working to get our farms the water they need is key to rural prosperity, and I applaud President Trump for making this key issue a top priority of his administration.”

There is widespread recognition that a 'status quo' approach to the longstanding imbalances in the supply and demand of water will not be effective. Under President Trump, Secretary Zinke and Secretary Ross, federal agencies are taking a proactive approach to tackling the water supply challenges that confront western communities. This has entailed operational changes as well as specific new investments in water and power infrastructure. The active collaboration by Interior and Commerce on the areas described in the Memorandum will position western communities to have the most abundant water and power supplies possible, assuring their place in a secure and prosperous American economy.

The Memorandum directs the Interior and Commerce Departments to take a number of specific actions, including:

Expediting regulatory actions essential to the operation of water infrastructure
Improving the information and modeling capabilities related to water availability
Expanding use of water desalination and water recycling
Accelerating and clarifying requirements for compliance with the Endangered Species Act and National Environmental Policy Act
Removing unnecessary burdens unique to the operation of the Columbia River Basin’s water infrastructure
“For too long, the tail has wagged the dog when it comes to our infrastructure and western water,” said Secretary Zinke. “The environmental laws and regulations that have been in place over decades can be implemented in such a way that supports our economy while still enhancing our environment. That challenge is something that motivates President Trump and this leadership team, and we are taking decisive action.”

The Memorandum on Western Water will re-prioritize agency funding toward accelerated completion of regulatory actions that, in the past, have been drawn out over several years, and result in better outcomes sooner.

In addition to helping safeguard the local tourism and recreation economy, the withdrawal also conserves important habitat for migrating big game species like elk and mule deer. The conservation of these routes has been one of Zinke's priorities as reflected in Secretarial Order 3362, which was signed in January 2018.

Don't be fooled, this BS "memorandum" is not going to improve any Delta conditions as might be assumed reading thru it. The intent of this action is to further reduce water flows thru the San Joaquin river system thru the Delta ..... so Central Valley farmers get more water to grow almonds to ship to China, and secondly to remove Environmental and Endangered Species protections so this continuing rape of the Delta can be accelerated to proceed legally.

Either way they build your tunnels the delta gone republican or democrat. Again dont blame farming for northern ca problems. The entire state of ca farms so you can say central ca want all your water. Your problems would be solved if the right people were running the state. Moving water is just good business just dont take it personal.

There's Republicans in California? It seems to me that the Democrats have run this state into the ground.

The people directly involved with overriding the Delta protections and ramming through the Tunnels are all Republican, except for Brown and his cronies.
It's the facts.

Last I looked the Democratic Party controls Califonia by 3 to 1 in Congress and 2 to 1 in Scramento, with Governor Brown being replaced with Newsom. Don't see any changes to the Dems super majority control of our state.
Trumps cabinate is powerless in California. Agriculture runs this state and water runs agriculture.
Finger pointing is a waste of energy.....vote!

Lord am I getting tired of the Republicans vs Democrats BS ... neither side is doing anything about this so quit the finger pointing and get wise. Here's the deal: back in 2016 Proposition 53, which would have required a public vote on projects backed by state-issued revenue bonds over $2 billion, FAILED when California voters said No. This was was a major (major) blow to getting this thing stopped. Just ask the Delta folks who knew about this Prop.

It'll be the State Water Resources Control Board (not Brown, not Newsome, not Trump)... who will make this thing a reality (or not) so make your voices heard to them. Also guess who else is gonna fight the tunnels hard as hell ?? Yep you guessed it those liberal hippy environmental groups you all hate so much.

Crazy how we're all kinda on the same team when we take of the political sunglasses huh ?

California Water Protection Resource Board is one of 6 branches of California government and political appointed. Agree let them know your view point, you may not have the political power to get them listen without a large organized group.

Hey Ash. Thanks for checkin' on this. This was a info about the water situation - no different than a Restore the Delta type update.Sometimes these things turn into a political discussion, as other posts have that started out about fishing waters type info, but this was sent out in the Fishing Wire to bring the info to the fishermen, so FISHING is where it was posted - under the IF FISH COULD TALK / ARTICLES headings. If it didn't have anything to do with fishing/fisheries and was only political talk not involving fishing, we would move it there. Example: Vote for (fill in the blank candidate) or Donate to (fill in the blank candidate) or info on the Income Tax Reform etc. etc. Thanks again for checking.

Expanding use of water desalination and water recycling
For me, this is the best line in this announcement. Desalination is the only way to actually create more water. Everything else is just shuffling around what we have.
