“We had an extreme cold front come through this weekend that completely shut down the bite. Anglers reported fish that they had found in pre-fish had disappeared. When they could be found, they were suffering from lockjaw”, said CVKF Tournament Director Brigham Vang.
Ultimately, Richard George of Clovis, CA and Damian Thao of Fresno, CA were able to figure them out and put the right fish on the board for a tie at 50.75 total inches. Damian brought in one of the two limits, while Richard was only able to manage three fish. The tiebreaker went to Richard thanks to his 17.0-inch big fish.
Richard caught his winning stringer on an underspin in 15 to 18 feet. He caught the first two before 9:00 AM and then the third and final fish at 11:00 AM. The first two were in six to eight feet of water and then fish number three was in fifteen to twenty feet. This is Richard’s first season of kayak fishing with CVKF and his first win out of a kayak. Next up for Richard is Eastman Lake in December for the final CVKF event. He is looking forward to fishing the 2019 CVKF season as well as a few others.
Damian was reported to be methodically working a ledge by one of the marinas from 15 to 20 feet with the drop shot. He stayed on the same spot all day and was able to grind out a limit that landed him in second place.
Third place went to Kongo Thao, also of Fresno, CA, who was able to manage the only other four fish limit. Kongo focused on the dam area with the drop shot.
