It was a rain-soaked Saturday morning earlier this fall and Cody Morrison of Pilot Point was battling a bad case of cabin fever. To cure it, he decided to hook up to his boat, don some rain gear and head to nearby Lake Ray Roberts to do a little bass fishing.
At first, the decision to go fishing knowing with more foul weather in the forecast didn't seem like a good one. Then Morrison reeled a monster of a bass with unusual DNA that made the drenching experience worthwhile...

Initially, Morrison thought the fish was a big smallmouth bass until he texted a photo to his friend, Adam Pels, also of Pilot Point. Pels looked at the picture and told Morrison he thought the fish looked remarkably similar in color and build to a 4.9-pound "meanmouth" bass he caught at Lake Ray Roberts last April.
"Meanmouth" is a slang term used to describe the genetic cross that results when a smallmouth bass and northern (Kentucky) spotted bass share a spawning bed during springtime. The crossbreeds aren't designated as a species of black bass....
