Best wopper plopper

Post by Rod Martin »

Haven’t thrown these much. Thinking of trying some of the 110s
What Rod and line setup would be best

Thanks

I use 65lb braid because it is a relatively heavy lure, and I don't want it to snap off on the cast.
Monkey Butt is a great color. So are black and white.

The mid size ploppers are the best, try to find the older ones, the newest manufactured ploppers are garbage. Use a longer rod so you can make long casts, 7’4” - 8’, heavy power, I like Powell rods. 40-50lb braid, brand doesn’t matter.

Ploppers are a great big fish bait. I throw only braided line and I use a pretty powerful rod. Lots of options. I normally throw it on one of my frog rods like 735 or 736C but at recent Berryessa event last fall I was throwing it on 794 SB. It's a smaller swimbait rod that's 7'9" and you can throw the 110 a LONG ways. The rod will also handle the larger ploppers as well but I was fishing the 110. Great rod for ploppers, small swimbaits and it's unbelievable 10 XD rod. Little longer handle helps with long casts and doesn't wear you out as bad. That 10 XD is a man killer to fish but it produces big fish too. Good luck.

Dobyns 805CB and 806CB absolutely launches them with 50lb braid!
