Craw style hair jigs

Post by Criley »

New to tying hair jigs. Trying to get some material ideas for replicating two crawdad claws. I've only tried rabbit hair strips based on some smalljaw YouTube vids. Maybe leather? Rawhide?

Looks cool, is the goal to not have a trailer and just the hair built into the jig? I just started tying my own jigs this December and dealing with Silicone and Rubber is hard enough I cant imagine hair. I did have a friend who tied me up some jigs with a small amount of hair and round rubber. Loved it, the hair would act as VELCRO to the fishes teeth making them hold onto it longer. I also firmly believe anytime we can put secondary action into our baits its a bonus ie silicone and rubber open up and dance differently - a plastic trailer has different actions as well.

I know this doesnt answer your question but I like talking jigs :)

Yes, jig with no need for a plastic trailer. Trying to get a presentation that pressured fish don't often see. The rabbit hair has a similar action as the old school pork trailers, but once submerged it condenses. Would like something that is bulkier once it gets wet. Haven't got around to playing with hair/silicone combo yet.

I think I found a solution... "magnum" size rabbit strips. Bigger than what I originally bought.

Have been fishing hair jigs to replicate crawdads for over 50 years using bucktail and polar bear hair. Today can’t use polar bear hair.
Rabbit hair cut into a trailer works Ok, prefer old school pork rind.
