Hydrilla, and/or Brazilian Elodea and yes its loaded with fish. Keep in mind, it also has a canopy with open water underneath, even though it looks like a wall of plant. The wall on tbe outside grows thick because of sun exposure, and creates the visual of a mass of weeds. So how can a bass hunt in a mass of weeds? That's what I thought for a while on the Potomac, and didn't fish the stuff....lol. Boy did I feel dumb after the fact.

Hydrilla - as mentioned previously finding clean crisp hydrilla makes me happy happy happy. We filp and punch this grass all the time - it's where the fish live. As i explained it to my lil boy this weekend think of the grass as a fish forest and we are looking from an airplane view, the canopy - its really thick and we cant see, but from a fish perspective there are open areas and meadows and tree trunks for them to hide in and eat lil critters. So while we may have to clean our baits after each cast, we are fishing where they live.

IMHO one of the keys to unlocking the Delta is learning the grass and embracing it. Flip those openings and be ready for the thunk - This weekend the Berkley Creature Hawg on the back of my jig and Pitboss on the flip stick in that grass is what got me bit.

How are the weeds and vegetation growth right now in the Delta? Anything worth me packing a heavy punching setup?

I think most guys will say always have a heavy punching setup. me not being most guys, I was able to flip the grass with a 3/8th jig and a 3/8th weight all day. I could have used a 3/4oz to get through some of the thicker stuff but felt like the slow fall was better for me on that given day. There were some hyacinth and penny wort that i did not flip as I didnt change up my setups.

It's the delta, being prepared for the situation at hand is always a good strategy.

Thanks Ash for the insight. As you can tell, I'm from out of town and only get to fish the Delta a few times a year. Just want to get some information and collect some data before heading out.

Hey Scooter,

I didnt realize you were coming from out of town, if your coming up in the next few weeks and you are truly limited on rods. I think a flippin stick will be just fine right now and some weights in that 1/4 - 1oz range should get your through where you want to be. while you may be leaving some fish behind, the majority of these fish are headed toward spawn mode so the grasses along the rip rap, and outside flats are where you will probably spend the majority of your time. Vibrating Jig, Jig, Flip stick and Stick Bait will probably make up the majority of your fishing.

Water color is very conducive for the Green's and Browns - Green pumpkin red flake, and perhaps the junebug or darker colors in the low light conditions. Have a great trip and looking forward to hearing your reports!
