If you fish (or hunt) a spot that it took some effort to find then tell a "friend" about it only to never ever have success at that location again because it is too crowded you would understand.

Some thoughts

There really isn't an answer to that question. A "secret" spot is usually only good for a certain time of year. In other words, a good secret spot might only be worth the "secret" during the spring, or fall. I have many, many so called "secret spots"....when Lake Berryessa is down 40 to 60 feet. Not so great a secret spot when the lake is only down 14 feet. What is important is the time of year and depth of the fish (and bait) you want to target. And - what are the most effective baits to use in the 10 to 40 foot range, or the 30 to 70 foot range. And you have to figure in water temps along with hot and cold spells with current weather patterns. A cloudy day in August or September can lead to a great bite! I know - I had one at Lake Oroville. Didn't think an August bite could ever be that good!!! Then there's water clarity, and, etc., etc., etc!!

Or you can forget all this and just go fishin' You are bound to nail the bite - occasionally!

I guess it depends on whether you think a spot is YOUR “secret spot” or if it’s something that you saw someone else fishing or someone else showed you the spot.
The truth is that the majority of guys out there are not putting the hours in on a lake just trying to find where the good fish are hanging out They have only one goal and that is to catch as many fish as possible that day. I get it. There’s nothing wrong with that idea in and of itself. However many of these guys are not concerned with trying to find the fish themselves and they want shortcuts to everything. They’re always the guys that want everyone to tell them where the fish are at, they’re always jumping from lake to lake to chase the latest bite they heard about, and they’re the first to advertise to the world where, when and how they caught the fish.
We’ve all seen it happen. One guy gets a little bit of advice from a dedicated angler and has a great day at the lake and tells everyone online about it right away with all the details. The next weekend there are 150 boats at the lake with guys from all over who you’ve never seen.
It’s a free country, people can go fish wherever they want. But, it sure makes it frustrating for the guys who put countless hours and thousands of casts in on a lake and have actually figured out how to consistently catch good fish just to have some “fly by night” dude who he gave a little advice to, to go and advertise his hard earned knowledge to anyone and everyone.
Believe me, this happens, a lot.
There’s not much that can be done about it honestly so it’s best to just keep plugging along. But, in my opinion, if a guy can help it, it would be best to keep things close to the chest as much as is reasonably possible.

Back in the 70's to the 90's before everyone had good sonar and GPS secret spots were guarded by those in the know. It's the loose lips sinks ships scenario. We studied overhead photos of lakes under construction, topo maps and observation at low pool levels, sometime creating isolated structure before storms moved in. Some spots were just dumbed across, most took a lot of work to find.
During the million dollar bass reward era of the early 90's secret spots at Castaic and Casitas were very hard to protect from being discovered. Nearly every observation point around the lake had people watching using spotting scopes. If you caught a big bass there would be boat showing up within a few minutes. The safe time was during the rain.
Yet some spots stayed secret even to this day although the Gaint bass population crashed and no reason to keep them a secret anymore. It's hard to believe my favorite secret spot "the old folks home" at Castaic rarely gets fished, it's not obvious why the big bass lived there.
Secret spots are part of bass fishing lore.
