Largemouth bass getting bigger

George W. Perry caught the 22-pound, four-ounce lunker on Montgomery Lake, in Telfair County, on June 2, 1932

Largemouth bass getting bigger

It was August, the dog days of summer, just at dusk, when the late Delbert Grizzle of Flatwoods cast a purple plastic nightcrawler into some bushes overhanging the shoreline of Greenbo Lake. He shook his rod and the lure plopped into the water.

Then the artificial lure seemed to come alive. His line swerved right and then toward deeper water. He set the hook, hard, and the battle was on.

Finally, the late Lardy Groves, then the mayor of Flatwoods, got the dipnet on the largemouth bass and hauled the monstrous thing into the boat.

Back at the dock it pushed the scales down to 13 pounds, 8 ounces. That broke Grizzle's own state record of better than 10 pounds caught from the lake a year earlier.

The year was 1966, 12 years after the 182-acre Greenbo Lake was formed. The bass stood as the state record for the species until 1984, when Dale Wilson landed a 13-pound, 10.4-ounce largemouth from Woods Creek Lake.

And now, 35 years after that, there’s a new Kentucky record, nearly a pound heavier. Mark Ward, of Evarts, Kentucky was fishing Highpoint Lake on April 19, 2019 when he battled in a largemouth weighing 14 pounds, 9.5 ounces

The mythical George Perry bass surfaces again. Perry was a young man in 1932 anyone believe the older man holding a big bass is George Perry?
What revolutionized giant bass populations was Orville Ball who visioned Florida LMB in San Diego city lakes, game changer.

Orville Ball did a full report on the little lake I fish back in '80 I believe. Unfortunately the powers that be(morons) could care less who he is & what he had to say. Have a couple of copys of the report, break them out occasionally, good read

Just food for thought i read an entire book that stated all the facts and i can say it tried to say that from beginning to end this is the biggest Fish Story! Ever told with no real proof. Read Lunker Lore you will be shocked at how much evidence there is that does not support the story. It gets really deep into it, Fish was weighed at a local post office on a scale not at the lake. Funny its a World Record since there is no evidence that proves it without a doubt. The pictures that surfaced and then disapeared the story changed several times over the yrs george perry remembered it differently every few years. They never could track down his fishing partner he just disappeared off the earth and many tried to interview him locate him with no luck. The post office worker that weighed it could not verify anything AKA the Weight.
Read the book if nothing else its an amazing read. Also talks on how there has never been a lm caught that was even close to that weight. Also did a study on the lake which was in poor shape at the time not known for big fish.
Book goes on and on!
