Yak-A-Bass (YAB) held their season opener on Saturday, 2/20/21 with an impressive field of 123 anglers competing to see who could secure the biggest 5 fish limit in a catch, picture, release (CPR) format tournament. Eligible bodies of water were located in Northern California east of Highway 99 between Folsom Lake to the north and Lake McClure to the south.

The weather proved to be a challenge with cool temps and windy conditions for most as the day wore on. Only 47 anglers were able to secure the five fish limit. “Conditions were good in the AM for the anglers but the wind picked up in the afternoon that made things a bit more challenging. 123 anglers launched and 123 anglers returned safely, that’s the most important piece”, said Tournament Director James Snyder.

The most productive body of water was New Melones Reservoir located near Angels Camp that produced over ½ of the limits. Anglers reported catching fish from the bank out to 60 feet. Main lake points were reported to be the most consistent bite. The primary baits were Alabama rigs, small swimbaits, jigs, dropshot, and the ned rig.

Ultimately, it was Justin Hall of San Jose, CA who found the winning limit of fish that contained his personal best largemouth bass coming in at 19.5” and 5.75 pounds (see attached pic). Big fish of the tournament was a 21.5” tank caught by Carson Riley of Windsor, CA.

Here’s your top ten:
1. J. Hall – 90.25”
2. Z. Christensen – 86.75”
3. T. Moua – 84.50”
4. J. Punkar – 84.50”
5. B. Vogt – 84.25”
6. J. Zhang – 84.25”
7. G. Garrabrant – 82.25”
8. M. Swisher – 81.75”
9. B. Hernandez – 81.75”
10. J. Myers – 81.75”

Up next for YAB is Lake Camanche on Saturday, 3/20/21. This event will the first qualifier for the West Coast Championship to be held on Clear Lake in August of 2021. Yak-A-Bass anglers will receive a buy one get one camping site fee for this event. Per Snyder, the fish should be in the transition from pre-spawn to spawn that should make for some big limits.
