Teen lands patent for fish hook that won't let worms get away
Jared Ott knows this only too well from his days spent casting for blue gills, bass and crappies at favorite fishing spots around his hometown.
So it made sense that as the Fond du Lac STEM Academy senior set out brainstorming projects he could work on this school year, the worm dilemma arose.
Students attending the academy are encouraged to get excited about ideas and run with them, said Principal Timothy Scottberg. Currently about 40 high school age students are enrolled in the specialty school that caters to careers in technology and engineering.
The 18-year-old reached out to one of the academy’s mentors, Mercury Marine senior engineer Kevin Anderson, to bounce ideas around. Anderson is one of several mentors in the community who partner with STEM students as a way to encourage a spirit of innovation, Scottberg said.
