Bass N Tubes (BNT) and the Sonoma County Belly Boat Bass Club (SCBBBC) held their annual team tournament on the California Delta on Saturday 3/13/21 out of Piper Point Marina. A total of 30 anglers from all over California (from Los Angeles to Susanville) came out to make up the 15 teams. Teams were randomly drawn in the morning and then anglers had 5 minutes to discuss a game plan. Each team worked in collaboration to secure their best 5 fish limit.

Launch was at 6:15 AM with check-ins at 3:30 PM. Weather was clear skies with high of 64 and a low of 46. The wind really picked up as the day went on making for some pretty challenging conditions for float tubers, kick boaters and kayakers (no motors allowed). Water temp was 52 in the AM and warming up to 56-57 by day’s end. Anglers experienced tough fishing conditions with only 4 of the 15 teams securing a limit.

Ultimately, it was the team of Scott Bernardo of San Jose (BNT) and Matt Niyiri of Santa Rosa (SCBBBC) that secured the win with their 12.31 pound limit. They reported catching their fish in Piper Slough on rocks with tulles with deep water access close by. Their primary baits were crankbaits and jigs.

Big fish of the day was a 6.03-pound tank caught by Taylor Capilla. He reported catching the fish early in the morning very close to the launch area on a wacky rigged Gary Yamamoto Cut Tail Worm wacky rigged.

Here’s your top 3:
1. Scott Bernardo / Matt Niyiri – 12.31 pounds
2. Jon Graves / Binh Phi – 12.28 pounds
3. Taylor Capilla / Topper De la Rosa – 10.83 pounds

Next up for BNT is Salt Springs Valley Reservoir on 4/24/21
Next up for SCBBC is Blue Lakes on 4/17/21

If you fish out of a float tube, kick boat or human powered kayak keep these trails in mind. The anglers are friendly, the organizers are welcoming and the tournaments are low stress.
