Fish or farmers?

Fish or farmers?
When a bipartisan group of state legislators held a press conference last week to demand that Gov. Gavin Newsom declare a statewide drought emergency, they assembled at a withered farm field east of Fresno, complete with piles of dead trees in the background.

The choice was no accident. With California already experiencing drought-like conditions, Central Valley farmers and their elected representatives are the ones putting the most political pressure on Newsom to make it official.

When CA farming, which is only 2% of the state's GDP, controls 80% of it's drinking water, something is wrong. Stop planting nut trees, which require 24/7 irrigation, in a desert.

Mark before you attack almond farmers first do your history on which crops use the most water
Dairy farming uses the most water. Flood irrigation there fields
And also rice farming in ca also uses the most water flood irrigation there fields
Followed by almonds on mirco drip systems
Pastures cattle and horses in pastures sprinkler systems and flood irrigation in some cases
Vineyards mirco drip systems
Cotton Row irrigation.
Again mark don't just attack the almond farmers
Dairy farming is big in ca and the central valley big dairy farm with a lot of alfalfa fields
And we also grow slot of rice here in the central valley
Northern ca coastal areas should stop there farming they use more water for flood and row irrigation than any other county combine. Mark get over it.

Hey guys dont beat up the local almond farmer or dairyman on this water issue!
The folks pushing for the water to be sent down the Aquaduct to SoCal is Big Corporate water as in Metropolitan Water District which supplies twenty sub water districts in southern California and Paramount Farms which is parent company of Wonderful products pistachios, tangerines, almonds and Pom pamagranite products.

Most of this water is going to SoCal to be sold as household drinking water and to allocate for service of new build homes!
It is all about the money and bottom line of the corporate water brokers and very little if any about the health of the river systems, delta or the fish that live, navigate or spawn in them. These fish are all being used as ponds for political position to get water to these profiteers!

These same profit makers are greasing the palms of the politicians and are major donors to the ones who can help them in their endeavors to move more water to SoCal for them to turn a profit on!
The water sent down south via the aquaduct has made SoCal water districts and folks like Stewart and Linda Resnick (Parmount Farms) multi billionaires!

While California is in just another dry cycle as it has a couple times per decade between major snow/rainfall years these water mongers are going to play the system to get their share and your share of central and northern California water
also.

There’s plenty of water for those over priced, cookie cutter shacks being built as 50% of the water is being wasted to flow out to the bay. :? Total rip off....

Good luck!

The only way 50% of the water is being released into the bay is if we have an abnormal wet year and they have no where to store the water so they are forced to dump it. That all counts in the grand total to them.
The smaller rivers like the Tuolumne and the Stanislaus are at their usual 150-300 cfs flow which ain't much and will be that way for the entire Summer.
They were releasing water early in the year for some unknown reason when the reservoirs had plenty of storage. I highly doubt it was for environmental reasons. I wish that there were open books so we knew for what and why any
water goes anywhere.
One drop that flows out to sea is wasted water to them. They don't care if we have rivers or nature around.
Water is only a commodity to them so their mentality is water should be stored and used only to irrigate crops and to be sold to homes at a high rate even though its unfit to drink.

Restore the Delta is one outfit that is fighting for our water. They are hurting now because of Covid, too.

The water you see from the Sacramento River Valley, Eastside rivers/streams, Delta, San Joaquin Basin and Tulare Basin is surface water. The water you don’t see is the San Joaquin aquifer a massive underground lake. Surface water fills underground water until the supply line overwhelms replenishment.
Water demand about 60 years ago started to drain the aquifers, 50’ wells had to be deeper, today 300’ wells are needed, 250’ of water gone. Water diverted from the valleys and basins no longer replenish the aquifers, a small percentage from irrigation and rain fall does find it’s way underground, but it takes decades.
If the aquifer water continues to be drained sea water can seep into the San Joaquin underground basins killing the well water. Everyone suffers.

Thank you Tom, I say it often when I hear persons say that the reservoir is full the drought is over!! Or we have had so much rain!! The aquifers are getting drained at a rate that exceeds any seasonal replenishment. California even in the wettest years should always act as though we are in a drought emergency. Conserve and we may have a slim chance to recover.

And we need water to go to the bay, or we will have no Delta ecosystem left.

Down here in SoCal they won’t be taking in any additional water at Castaic Lake. DWR is getting ready to do some seismic retrofit work on the intake tower bridge and some other stuff. They began the water draw down beginning May first. They are going to take it down 150 feet from full pool. 1510 minus 150 is 1360. It’s supposed to stay at that level until this time next year. Absolutely screws up the spawn. There’s been a couple of drilling crews working in the parking lot. Whenever I ask drilling crews what they are drilling for they always say ‘A Paycheck’. Must be a industry standard canned response! Fished there Monday fishing’s pretty good. Had 8 bass nothing under 3 pounds. Nothing OVER 3 1/2 pounds. Those are good fish for Castaic. Previous week had 8 bass nothing OVER 1 pound!

Editors Note: I eat a lot of almonds myself. Good for Omega 6 fats. However, whenever I drive up to the Delta (doing that again this Sunday am) I see big piles of almond trees that have been pulled up. Probably because of water shortages.
Have some fun out there .... Enjoy that time on the water !!
