Next Sunday (5/23/21) is a big day for California kayak bass anglers. The CA Bass Nation (BASS) and the Wild West Bass Trail (WWBT) are teaming up to host one of the biggest kayak bass fishing events on the west coast. This will be the only CA event for 2021 for BASS and the second regular season event for the WWBT. Tournament officials are expecting over 150 of the west’s top competitors. Anglers have the option of competing in both events simultaneously with a combined payout of well over 10k for the first place angler.

The top 10 percent of the BASS competitors will advance to the national championship. WWBT anglers will be competing for precious points towards the AOY title as well as qualification for the TOC in November.
Jeremy Dehart, President of the WWBT commented, “As we approach this weekend you do not want to miss this event. There will be some big industry news announced at this event that will be ground breaking for the kayak bass fishing scene on the west coast. We will be going live via WWBT social media outlets on Saturday evening, make sure you tune in."

Late spring on Clear Lake can be an exciting time with active fish all over the lake that will bite a multitude of offerings.

Tas Moua of Fresno, CA highest finishing CA angler in the 2020 BASS event on Clear Lake (2nd. Place) commented, “The bigger fish (over 18”) are hard to come by. It’s going to take the low 90s to win. Fish are in all 3 stages of the spawn and found from shallow to deep. During practice, I saw tons of fish but they are all the same size.”

John Myers of Atwater, CA (currently sitting in 2nd for the WWBT AOY race and 6th. place finisher at the 2020 BASS event on Clear Lake) said, “The bite is a lot different than it was last year. A lot of the fish are still bedding, it’s not easy to catch a big one. I still think 100 inches is possible and it will take 85 inches to make the cut. Someone is going to have 100, 2nd place will be 94 and it will trickle down from there. To win it you are going to have fish clean and make all the right decisions.”

Damian Thao of Fresno, CA (2020 WWBT AOY, currently sitting in 1st place for the WWBT AOY race and 10th. place finisher at the 2020 BASS event on Clear Lake) said, “There is a lot of fish to be caught, that’s for sure. I say 95 inches for the win. It can be won many different ways. They are not keying in on a certain pattern, it’s mostly junk fishing.”

Griffith Garrabrant of Oakland, CA (2020 WWBT TOC Champion on Clear Lake) reported, “This will be my first tournament on Clearlake since winning the WWBT TOC last year. I’m looking forward to fishing against a massive 130+ person field and some of the best anglers on the west coast. With no time to pre-fish, I’m going in blind and banking on some tried and true honey/community holes. With so many anglers and it being a Sunday at Clearlake I know crowds are going to play a factor, so being courteous and not getting worked up is going to be important. I always try to go in with the mindset of having fun and fishing hard from start to finish. I’m planning to throw reaction in the morning and will slow down to finesse fish if needed. I think the top ten will have 90+ inches with the winner having just shy of 100 inches. Best of luck to all the anglers fishing the events.”

Off-limits starts on 5/17 and concludes on 5/21/21. The official practice day is 5/22/21. Competition begins at 6:00 AM on 5/23/21 and concludes at 3:00 PM. Awards will follow at Library Park at 5:00 PM.
